Trump Made a Major Typo (Surprise Surprise!) in Fundraising Email and It Could End Up as DeSantis’s New Nickname

Former President Donald Trump fired off a press release about Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in which he inadvertently came up with a new nickname for his likely political rival by referring to him as “Rob.”

The entertaining part about this is that Trump’s campaign team sent out an “in case you missed it” alert early Wednesday, and in so doing, made two mistakes for the price of one. The team shared a story from The Daily Mail, which had a silly goof in this headline: “Steve Bannon calls Rob DeSantis a ‘weasel’ and Mike Lindell brands him ‘disgusting’ for his response to Trump’s looming indictment as MAGA world rages at the Florida governor for his ‘p*rn star’ dig.”

Trump’s team didn’t notice the innovative spelling of DeSantis’s first name, blasting the press release out as is.

And just like that, people on Twitter took note, The Independent reports.

“Trump now calling DeSantis ‘Rob’ in press releases,” New York Times correspondent Maggie Haberman tweeted. “Apparently they were quoting the Daily Mail and didn’t change.”

That led another Twitter user to observe:

“Funny thing is, it might become the new nickname rather than admit a typo.”

“He was struggling to come up with the right nickname, but getting someone’s name wrong is so much more dismissive, so I think Rob could stick,” another user added.

The Independent notes that former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi became well-known for pretending to forget people’s names as a way of insulting them. Axios noted this in May 2021 referring to the tactic as “feigned forgetfulness.”

Most notably, Pelosi has referred to Wisconsin Republican Senator Ron Johnson as “Don.” I have a lot of nicknames for Johnson but none of them are suitable for appearing on Facebook. Axios also reports “she’s also acted as if she can’t remember fellow lawmakers at all, as she’s done with [Republican Senate Leader Mitch] McConnell while discussing negotiations over coronavirus relief.”

“Putting aside that Don Trump has previously referred to his current wife as Melanie, normal folk would take being called a weasel by the likes of Steve Bannon as a high compliment. Thin-skinned Harvard & Yale graduate Ron DeSantis?” Michael Friedman post on Twitter.

Slate’s Jim Newell commented: “Maybe this is a typo but this is the winner. Trump MUST commit to “Rob DeSantis.”

New York Times opinion columnist said she found “‘Rob DeSantis,’ is actually pretty funny.”

Another Twitter user couldn’t help but add:

“Two years of meticulous image cultivation and political positioning just to get turned into strawberry jelly by a guy who won’t learn your real name on purpose.”

Some users guessed that other notable politicians may undergo interesting name changes.

“I expect we’ll eventually see similar comments about Mark Pence,” CNN Medical Analyst Jonathan Reiner tweeted.

“Republicans have been calling the Democratic Party by the wrong name for years as a sign of disrespect (and the wrong name is almost always quoted directly without comment by the press) Seems weird it took this long for Republicans to start doing it to other Republicans,” another user added.

“I don’t know man, issuing an official statement (or email whatever this is) with the words ‘looming indictment’ next to your candidate’s name seems pretty dumb,” said Jordan Teller.

True, it’s not terribly bright to share a press release that mentions your candidate’s “looming indictment,” but remember this is Trump’s campaign. His brain misfires frequently, so why not theirs? If it were possible to put a price tag on these folks collective brain cells (including Trump’s) you might have enough money for a trip to the local dollar store.

Or maybe not.
