Now that reports have surfaced that prosecutors have obtained a recording of former President Donald Trump admitting he kept a classified document after he left the White House, questions have been raised about how much more evidence could be retrieved from a laptop belonging to one of his former aides.

Special Counsel Jack Smith’s team had obtained an audio clip of Trump saying in July 2021 that he had kept classified Pentagon material referring to a potential attack on Iran, CNN reported earlier. In the clip he admitted he knew he no longer had the power to declassify the document after he left the White House, Newsweek reports.

So this means I’m not really sure who Trump was trying to fool by consistently saying he’s done nothing wrong in keeping the classified materials and by claiming he declassified all of them before leaving office. Maybe the man is just delusional and he really believes he’s done nothing wrong, but one thing is certain: His lawyers have never repeated this argument in official court filings during the investigation, and the newly obtained audio clip suggests Trump knew he didn’t declassify all the documents he took with him after leaving office.

A spokesman for the ex-president is now in damage control mode and in a statement about the audio reports said “leaks from radical partisans” are designed to “inflame tensions and continue the media’s harassment” of Trump and his supporters.

At the time when the audio of the former president was recorded, he was at his golf resort in Bedminster, New Jersey, where he was meeting with people helping his former chief of staff Mark Meadows write his autobiography. Margo Martin, an aide to Trump, was also on hand. Martin frequently taped conversations authors had with Trump to make sure his comments were written accurately.

Martin is the former deputy director of communications for Trump’s Save America PAC. She currently works on his 2024 campaign and testified in front of a special grand jury last March as part of the classified documents probe. Her laptop and phones were imaged by prosecutors last January.

During her testimony in March, Martin was asked about the recording of the ex-president discussing holding onto the classified documents. This is reportedly when Trump’s lawyers found out about the tapes, according to a report in The Guardian.

Democratic strategist Adam Parkhomenko couldn’t help but observe on Twitter that “the most interesting thing about Hunter Biden’s laptop is Margo Martin’s laptop,” an obviously direct reference to the younger Biden’s laptop, which of course, has Republicans stuck on “repeat” because they think it contains details about alleged corruption.

The situation continues to grow darker for Trump and it just couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. He believed he was above the law. Now he’s finding out he isn’t. Hopefully Jack Smith will provide the retribution this man deserves.
