It’s got to be hard to be the wife and/or girlfriend of a really popular athlete. You don’t have to just watch your behavior in public, but you have to get along with the other WAGs as well. They’re almost like military spouses; there’s just a connection that comes from both having partners in the same job that gives them something in common.

BUT. I don’t think any normal rules apply to Taylor Swift.

Swift’s boyfriend, Travis Kelce, is pretty famous. As their star tight end, he’s arguably the most famous guy on the Chiefs. But the only reason some see him as more popular than quarterback Patrick Mahomes is because he’s dating Tay Tay.

The QB’s wife, of course, is the other woman in the headline, Brittany Mahomes.

And despite the fact that after the Chiefs won their first Super Bowl in 50 years under Mahomes and Trump mistakenly congratulated “the great state of Kansas” (and despite her husband mocking Trump with a doctored t-shirt after the faux pas), Brittany has declared her support for him in the presidential election.

I think everyone is pretty much aware of where Taylor Swift’s loyalties lie, politically speaking. Swift has spoken up against Trump in the past, acknowledging in her 2020 documentary Miss Americana that she regretted not speaking up about him and his policies during the 2016 election. Ahead of the 2020 election, Swift tweeted that Trump was cavorting with white supremacists and promised “we will vote you out in November.”

Now, the public likes to stir things up. So when social media users pointed out that Brit had “liked” one of Trump’s Instagram posts outlining the 2024 GOP platform, they got on her case.

Later, in a series of Instagram posts, Brittany posted “I mean honestly, to be a hater as an adult, you have to have some deep-rooted issues you refuse to heal from childhood. There’s no reason your brain is fully developed and you hate to see others doing well.”

Later, she expanded on that, saying “Contrary to the tone of the world today… you can disagree with someone, and still love them. You can have differing views, and still be kind. Read that again!”

But then Trump had to get in on the “spat,” giving Brittany a shoutout on his own social media platform after Mahomes “liked” another post that said “Trump-Vance 2024” and still another congratulating her for not “backing down” in her beliefs.

Trump went for the Hail Mary:

“I want to thank beautiful Brittany Mahomes for so strongly defending me, and the fact that MAGA is the greatest and most powerful Political Movement in the History of our now Failing Country. With Crime and Illegal Immigration totally out of control, INFLATION Ravaging all Americans, and a World that is laughing at the stupidity of our hapless ‘leaders,’ it is nice to see someone who loves our Country and wants to save it from DOOM. What a great couple — See you both at the Super Bowl!”

I’m not actually sure Brittany wanted things to go that far, if she wants Taylor around as a bestie much longer. It’s one thing to stand by a friend despite having different views. It’s another thing entirely to actually be associated with Donald Trump. So Brittany has some decisions to make. Many people wonder about her marriage, since her husband is biracial, having a white mother and a black father. Patrick hasn’t been open about who he’s voting for, but he has spoken up about police brutality and supported Black Lives Matter. In 2020, he urged the NFL to denounce and separate itself from racism. So, sounds like Britt and Patrick might not be voting for the same person. And that’s ok, if it works for their marriage. But is losing T. Swift and the connection to all that fame worth it for Britt?

Is that why the two sat apart for the first game of the season, after hanging out all the time at games before? We can’t say for sure, but we’re betting Brittany picks Taylor over Trump in the end.
