Trump Makes Horrifying Suggestion About the Future That Would Mean the End of America as We Know It

There seems to be a habit in the Trump White House of doing or saying things that are terrifying, then walking it back like they meant something else entirely. Not little things, either — the last one before Trump did it again yesterday was 8 days ago, when Elon Musk absolutely did a Nazi salute [1] at the inauguration, then pretended it was somehow taken out of context.

When it comes from the president, however, it sounds a little more ominous than from anyone else. There are times I’ve lost sleep over things Trump has said, then pretended he was joking about. Remember when he asked his old Secretary of Defense Mark Esper if they could just shoot protesters during the George Floyd protests?

I’ll bet Pete Hegseth’s answer to that would be a lot different than Esper’s, and that gives me serious pause.

But yesterday, Trump trotted out a crowd favorite, at least among his die-hard supporters: He once again suggested that he’s been giving serious thought to trying to run for president again.

As it stands, he of course cannot do anything of the sort. The 22nd Amendment prevents it, and leaves nothing up to the imagination. Or at least your imagination or mine. It leaves plenty to Trump’s imagination, and those of his voters and even some Republican lawmakers.

Just a few days ago, Rep. Andy Ogles actually introduced another Amendment [2] that would supersede the 22nd and allow Trump to run in 2028.

Perhaps buoyed by that piece of legislation, Trump said it again yesterday to a room full of House Republicans, even joking directly with House Speaker Mike Johnson, the third most powerful person in Washington, D.C.

“I’ve raised a lot of money for the next race that I assume I can’t use for myself, but I’m not 100% sure,” he said to GOP lawmakers in Doral, Florida. “I think I’m not allowed to run again. Am I allowed to run again?” Turning to the Speaker of the House, Trump said, “Mike, I better not get you involved in that.”

Donald Trump knows full well that he’s not allowed to run again. But it still gives me pause.

See, Trump ALSO believes that he can alter a different Amendment to the Constitution — the 14th — with nothing more than a stroke of his pen. In fact, he already tried to do it, by declaring an end to birthright citizenship on day one of his new administration.

That’s literally a constitutional right, and he thinks he can just say it no longer is. And the fact of the matter is, if a judge hadn’t already blocked the order, if there weren’t already lawsuits over this, he might have gotten away with it.

So every time Trump “jokes” about running again, it sounds to me like he’s still testing the waters to see if there’s really an appetite for it among the people who could help him get elected, and if there’s any way he could pull it off.

The reason that I believe Trump could convince his voters that he’s eligible — other than the fact that they’d lick peanut butter out from between his toes if he told them to — is because he’s been so successful at pushing the lie that the 2020 election was stolen.

So in Trump’s mind, he outright won two elections (even though he hasn’t won a majority of the popular vote in any election), so those are a gimme. But he should be allowed to “make up for” the one that was stolen from him, too. Again, that’s HIS view, not mine.

It’s not a huge leap to think that it would be easy to convince his voters, who are already not known for being the smartest people ever to fill out a ballot, that his way of thinking makes sense.

Then, of course, he could tie everything up in court cases. He could delay decisions. He could use the White House to campaign from, like he did the entire time he was there before.

And if the news media operated the same way they did during the 2024 campaign, they’d treat it like it was a a completely normal candidacy, like he was just another person running for president. After all, they rarely questioned whether a guy who had already been convicted of felonies and been found liable for sexual abuse before 2024 should even be able to run.

You may have already seen this story in the news about him saying it yet again. But give this some thought, and see if it doesn’t make you as nervous as it does me.
