Indianapolis 500 winner Simon Pagenaud and Team Penske went to the White House on Monday as the Indy 500 winning team was honored Monday afternoon by Donald Trump.

According to a pool report, here’s how the White House event unfolded:

Shortly after 4 p.m., aides rolled the Borg-Warner trophy down a South Lawn sidewalk. Trump, accompanied by Roger Penske and Vice President Mike Pence, to the Rose Garden, praised Penske for his 18 wins at the Indy 500.

Trump also praised NASCAR, which he said he liked because the league endorsed him.

“I wouldn’t do it,” Trump said as he congratulated Pagenaud. Then, glimpsing the metal hardware, he seemed to change his mind. “Maybe for that trophy I would do it.”

Pagenaud said that for a Frenchman it was an honor to visit the “White House with President Trump and his phenomenal achievements.” He then handed Trump a helmet, and Trump said he’d find a good spot for it.

Pagenaud was joined by about 35 members of Team Penske, as well as IndyCar CEO Mark Miles, Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Doug Boles, Senior Vice President of Events for IMS Allison Melangton, and Menards owner and team sponsor John Menard. Gov. Eric Holcomb was also on hand.

When Trump walked out of the Oval Office to the group, they stood stoic until he starting clapping to remind them to start clapping for him, because…narcissism.
