Viral Video Compares Trump’s Coronavirus Response to Other World Leaders and it’s Devastating for Trump

A recently released video succinctly shows just how hamfisted President Donald Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic has been as compared to other prominent leaders around the world. Leaders who, unlike Trump, have taken decisive action against the virus.

The short film, “Donald Trump: A Study In Leadership,” compiled by The Atlantic, pairs footage of Trump with several of his peers, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. I’ve provided the video below.

While I’m sure most of us aren’t surprised by Trump’s botched handling of the situation, especially as Merkel, Trudeau, and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern talk about just how serious this pandemic is, it is, as Atlantic writer Anne Applebaum notes, quite shocking to note just how clueless this man and many of his fellow Americans really are.  She notes that far too many of us still think of the U.S. in superlative terms, that “our democracy is the fairest and most robust in the world.”

“But watch this video and ask yourself: Is this the kind of leadership you expect from a superpower? Does this make you feel confident in our future? Or is this man a warning signal, a blinking red light, a screaming siren telling all of us, and all of the world, that something about our political system has gone profoundly awry?”

We see Trump at the beginning of the pandemic, telling an adviser “I really think doctor, you want to treat this like you treat the flu. It’s going to be fine.”

Well, 99,737 dead Americans later, it’s definitely not fine.

The video cuts to Trudeau, who tells reporters that “basing [the government’s] decisions on evidence, on facts, on the best science available [will] be extremely important for keeping Canadians safe.”

The video highlights another striking incident, the one where Trump discusses the CDC’s announcement that people should wear masks to protect themselves.

“It’s voluntary,” he tells the press. “So you don’t have to do it. I don’t think I’m going to be doing it.”

Then we see Ardern advising her country.

“I need every New Zealander to help me,” she says. “We won’t achieve that outcome of looking after everyone unless people follow the rules.”

With Trump helming this country, our political system truly has gone awry.
