Election 2020

Massive 72 Percent of Americans Think Trump Favors White People — Including 58 Percent of Republicans

A recent poll shows that the majority of Americans believe President Donald Trump favors white people, while former Vice President Joe Biden is viewed as more even-handed. The CBS News/YouGov poll, released Tuesday questioned respondents on a number of issues relating to protests over the killing of George Floyd.

The results showed a huge divide between Republicans and pretty much everyone else on many of the questions, Mediaite reports. And some of the results are startling, but not necessarily all that unsurprising since we’re talking about Republicans.

According to the results, 57 percent of those polled believe police treat white people more fairly than blacks. However, only 29 percent of Republicans espoused that view.

Then the poll asked “As president, do you think Donald Trump favors, works against, or is neutral towards whites,” and there was more agreement on that, even if it wasn’t completely unanimous. At least 72 percent agreed that Trump favors white people. And out of that number, 86 percent of Democrats and 67 percent of Independents said Trump favors whites. As for Republicans, 56 percent said they viewed Trump as more favorable to whites.

But the divide became more apparent when people were asked about Trump’s treatment of African-Americans. In this instance, 51 percent of Republicans said that Trump “favors” black people, while an additional 41 percent claimed he was “neutral,” as opposed to 85 percent of Democrats and 47 percent of Independents.

Then the respondents were asked a similar question about Biden and in this instance, their replies were more equal across the board.

“If he became President, do you think that Joe Biden would favor, work against, or would be neutral toward the following groups,” the question asked. The responses ranged from 39 percent who said Biden would favor whites and 46 percent who said he would favor blacks. Other groups — Hispanics, men, and women — fell between those polls.

A small percentage (between 21 and 24 percent) said Biden will “work against” any of the groups, with four percent of Republicans claiming Biden will work against white people.

The poll also shows Biden maintaining a healthy lead over Trump nationally, by four points. That’s down two points from last the last poll, but there’s now speculation as the tragic events of the week continue to unfold that Biden will choose a black woman for a running mate, and one important data point about this is troubling: The poll found that while 85 percent say they plan to vote, that number drops to 77 percent among black voters.

Let’s hope this changes in the months leading up to the election.
