Sarah Huckabee Sanders Says Trump’s Church Photo Op Stunt is a Sign of ‘Courageous Leadership!’

Sarah Huckabee Sanders defended her former boss on Fox News Business Tuesday, as he continues to receive plenty of heat for hypocritically holding up a bible in front of a church and pretending to be religious.

The Washington, D.C.-based St. John’s Church, also known as the “Church of the Presidents” was damaged during the weekend of unrest, and Trump is being roundly criticized for allowing police to tear-gas protesters.

At least one bishop at the historic church tore him a new one yesterday for using tragedy and unrest as a photo opportunity, NBC Washington reports.

“The president just used a Bible and one of the churches of my diocese as a backdrop for a message antithetical to the teachings of Jesus and everything that our church stands for,” said bishop Mariann Budde in a statement. “To do so, he sanctioned the use of tear gas by police officers in riot gear to clear the church yard.”

So perhaps former White House press secretary Sanders was on hand to do a bit of damage control for Trump, whom she referred to as a “courageous leader,” according to Joe.My.God. We’ve included a clip of her appearance below.

“Look, the people who desecrated St. John’s Church — that is an act of true cowardice (unlike her boss, perhaps, who hid in a bunker as the protests raged). The president, standing up in front of the country, holding a Bible, standing before a church, that’s a sign of courageous leadership.”

“And that’s the type of leadership that we need,” she added. “The president was looking for a way to bring people together. He’s been very clear, he supports the peaceful protests.”

Well, a lot of people are condemning him for his church stunt, so we’ll admit she’s right.

“But this is a country of law and order,” Sanders added. “The president’s number one job is to keep us safe. And in order to keep us safe, we have to have law and order.”

Even if it apparently involves the police gassing peaceful protesters.
