Marco Rubio Tweets Tribute to Rep. John Lewis…Using a Photo of Former Rep. Elijah Cummings
Tributes to Rep. John Lewis streamed in from both sides of the political aisle Saturday morning, after the civil rights icon died Friday night at the age of 80 following a battle with cancer.
Sen. Marco Rubio was one of the many lawmakers who tweeted about his colleague, writing that it was an “honor” to serve in Congress with Lewis whom he described as a “genuine and historic American hero.”
But beneath the Tweet, Rubio included a picture of himself speaking not with Lewis, but former Rep. Elijah Cummings, who died last year. The tweet has since been deleted, although the image remained Rubio’s profile photo on his Twitter page for some time after before he changed that, as well.

Rubio did correct his mistake, thank goodness:
Earlier today I tweeted an incorrect photo
John Lewis was a genuine American hero
I was honored to appear together in Miami 3 years ago at an event captured in video below

Still, Twitter had a field day:
Why is *every Republican* so bad at this? Here's Marco Rubio offering his condolences over the death of John Lewis atop a picture of him speaking to *Elijah Cummings*. pic.twitter.com/X7kYQ9cg44

You can try deleting it, @marcorubio, but the internet is forever. We all know that your racist eyes couldn’t tell the difference between #ElijahCummings and #JohnLewis. pic.twitter.com/L2U6ytftTv

Marco Rubio’s tribute to John Lewis obliviously features a photo of him and Elijah Cummings. He even made it his avatar. pic.twitter.com/Go0OtgdvRm

Marco Rubio should just retire and vanish from public view. Or at least until he can tell black people apart. (That's not John Lewis if you're still wondering) pic.twitter.com/Yu4rxrbmAN

Never forget – this is the moment Little Marco's hope of ever becoming president was completely destroyed. Chris Christie deserves our thanks. pic.twitter.com/d0SJQavlXB

Marco Rubio just “all black people look alike’d” John Lewis.
