The Washington Post has a new story breaking the internet on a summery Saturday night. Mary Trump has come forward with a secretly recorded conversation between herself and Donald Trump’s sister, Maryanne Trump-Barry, in which Trump’s sister – a former federal judge – slams her brother with a candor that only family can attain. This time, however, the “family” is within the famously “brand-protective” Trump family, making the truth ring through with that much more clarity.

The tapes were made around the time that Trump was separating children from their parents on the southern United States border. Trump said “maybe I will have to put her at the border,” speaking of his sister, Judge Trump-Barry. His sister is heard saying:

“All he wants to do is appeal to his base. He has no principles. None. None. And his base, I mean my God, if you were a religious person, you want to help people. Not do this.”

Judge Trump-Barry was described as aghast about the way her brother handled the presidency:

“His goddamned tweet and lying, oh my God. I’m talking too freely, but you know. The change of stories. The lack of preparation. The lying. Holy shit.”

Maryanne’s observations don’t prove that she’s a good person so much as that she’s a functioning professional adult. Any adult should be aghast about the tweets, the lying, the changing stories, the lack of preparation, the lying, because holy shit the man is the president of the United States and the United States should have a president that is almost as competent as the produce manager at the grocery store. Maryanne knows that her brother is nowhere close and she just named five reasons he failed the “competent test.”

Maryanne also complained about what they’re doing to kids at the border, saying that Trump hasn’t read any of her opinions (caselaw) in immigration cases, one of which berated a “judge” (likely an administrative judge within INS) for not treating an asylum applicant respectfully. Mary asked Trump’s sister about it, who had an interesting answer:

“What has he read?” Mary Trump asked her aunt.

“No. He doesn’t read,” Barry responded.
Notice that Maryanne didn’t say “No, he likely never read my opinions,” or “I doubt he ever reads cases.” She said “No. He doesn’t read.” Period. He doesn’t read. We have heard this before and it seems obvious that Trump doesn’t read. Still, it is a startling admission. The president of the United States doesn’t read.

But she saved her sharpest criticism for last:

“It’s the phoniness of it all. It’s the phoniness and this cruelty. Donald is cruel.”

Yes. He is. And Maryanne is part of the problem. She should come forward and talk about it. She needs to tell the country what she knows because we’re long past the point where one can say it would be too “tough on the family” if she came out and talked. The country is falling apart, which is likely why Mary made the tape, to begin with. The niece knows that the truth needs to come out.
