Postmaster General is Humiliated When He’s Unable to Answer How Much it Costs to Mail a Postcard

You’d think being in charge of the United States Postal Service would mean that postmaster Louis DeJoy would know how much it costs to mail a postcard. You’d think.

But you’d be wrong.

While testifying before Congress Monday, Dejoy was questioned by lawmakers about the ongoing upheaval at the USPS. So Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) decided it was time for a pop quiz of sorts, about the prices for services, The Week reports. How much, for instance, is a first-class postage stamp? Fifty-five cents, DeJoy answered.

So how much does it cost to mail a postcard, Porter wanted to know.

“I don’t know,” said DeJoy, clearly befuddled.

Porter, clearly shocked fired back “you don’t know the cost to mail a postcard?”

“I don’t,” DeJoy said, laughing. “I know very little about postage stamps.”

But that’s not all, he said, noting he also doesn’t know the starting rate for USPS priority mail, nor could he estimate how many people voted by mail in the 2016 presidential election (roughly 33 million). So Porter, known for her tough questions, quickly took control of the situation, Rolling Stone reports.

During his testimony, DeJoy, a GOP megadonor of the worst stripe was combative and smug, stubbornly refusing to commit to handing over documents or to recommission mail-sorting equipment that had been unplugged and insisted without evidence that it isn’t needed.

That didn’t faze Porter, who highlighted the man’s complete indifference to the crucial public service he oversees — an indifference that’s led to people not receiving the medications or benefit checks they need on time and even led to the deaths of livestock.

Porter was even able to get him to admit he didn’t perform any analysis or oversight of the sweeping changes that have now caused on-time deliveries to stall, and seen collection boxes confiscated and high-speed equipment ripped out of mail-sorting offices in key voting states.

Then he claimed the orders to slow down the mail didn’t come from him.

“I did not order major overhaul plans,” DeJoy told Porter. “The items you identify were not directed by me.”

“Mr. DeJoy, if you did not order these actions to be taken, please tell the committee the name of who did.”

His response?

“I don’t know.”

He refused to take responsibility for the changes, but Rolling Stone notes he apparently approves of them and then just as stubbornly refused to roll the changes back.

“Mr. DeJoy, will you commit to reversing these changes?” Porter asked.

His answer was a defiant “no.”

I don’t know if anyone in the Trump administration is more callous than DeJoy. He doesn’t care that people didn’t get their necessary medication on time, or that tiny chicks, the livestock in question, died because they didn’t reach their destination in time. He’s definitely one very cold dude who fails to own up to any responsibility for the tragedy that’s destroying our postal service. He’s simply self-serving, like his disgusting boss.

Fortunately, Katie Porter has laid this bare for the world to see, in the exchange below.
