Trump Aides Trash Top National Security Official …for Wearing Mask in Front of Trump

Logic takes on some weird habits in the Trump administration, where apparently several officials are annoyed at Deputy National Security Adviser Matt Pottinger for wearing a mask. Mind you, every person in the West Wing was briefly (in May) required to wear masks, and one high-ranking official told The Daily Beast he did so “because I’m not a moron.”

But this is Trumplandia after all, where logic is a rare beast and personal situations can get well, kinda bitchy.

That’s what happened in Pottinger’s case. He donned a mask early on, and even though it’s been months since the pandemic began, these folks are still trashing him behind his back while his clueless leader, Donald Trump, and other senior officials continue to go maskless. That’s according to three senior officials and one former official.

Apparently some people close to the president view Pottinger’s mask-wearing as an indication that he was openly challenging Trump, one of the senior officials said.

“That was something that angered and confused a bunch of people,” one official familiar with the situation said. “The thinking was, ‘We are getting tested all the time, what is the point? [Some officials] warned him that this was something that could risk pissing off the president. But Matt did not care.”

But here’s the thing: Pottinger’s boss, National Security Adviser, Robert O’Brien, tested positive for COVID-19.

How ridiculous that these nudniks are pissed off at someone for trying to protect their health and the health of others. Because that’s what people who wear masks are doing: protecting themselves and others.

Trump has been all over the place on the issue of wearing masks and in July during a Fox News interview, he said he disagreed with Robert Redfield, the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who advised people to wear masks to stop the disease in its tracks.

“I don’t believe in that,” Trump told Fox News host Chris Wallace. “I don’t agree with the statement that if everybody would wear a mask, everything disappears.”

This is the height of arrogance and stupidity. Redfield is a leading virologist. Trump is in no position to argue with this man.

But then he seemed to back down on this, posting a photo of “your favorite president” wearing a mask on Twitter.

Trump is another one of those who have teased Pottinger behind his back for wearing a mask and has joked that he’s not sure if the deputy national security adviser ever takes it off.

Because that’s the kind of person Trump is. I’m going to recommend that you read the story at Daily Beast because it goes into the story of the U.S.’s increasingly convoluted relationship with China thanks to Trump and how this relates to Pottinger.

With this pandemic, Trump is leading the U.S. right over a cliff and it’s perhaps the most important reason why we need to vote him out of office in November.
