Carl Bernstein on Trump Tax Bombshell: ‘This Is the Smoking Gun that Will End the Trump Presidency’

It does seem like everything has changed overnight.

It is quite unsettling to have a president that one knows owes $400 million dollars over the next five years and no apparent means to pay it back. Nothing in his tax returns indicates that he has the type of revenue that can overcome those liabilities, at least not with cash. And that’s when people start to worry because there are other ways to clear a debt, especially as president.

Carl Bernstein knows a thing or two about presidential scandals and he sees this as the defining scandal of Trump’s presidency – finally a “smoking gun.” Bernstein appeared on CNN this morning to speak to Alisyn Camerota, who mentioned that two numbers jumped off the page, the $750 in total income tax paid, and the $400 million in debt that will come due in the next five years. She asked for Bernstein’s “major takeaway:”

That Donald Trump and his family are grifters, and they have created — he has created –the first grifter presidency in the history of the United States, in which his purpose in running for the presidency and exercising the powers of the presidency, the fundamental reason is to bail himself and his family out,

What a devastating line. “He ran to bail himself and his family out.” And the Trumps thought they were having trouble raising money for the campaign before the New York Times revelations!

It shows in his foreign relationships especially with Erdogan and Turkey, it shows the fundamental corruption and criminality of Donald Trump, and now we have the definitive evidence, and he is trying to make the conduct of the press the issue, instead of the conduct of himself in his refusal to pay taxes adequately, and also to keep them secret.

Right, it is the media’s fault that they’re reporting on the fact that Trump isn’t solvent and-or is hiding income and exaggerating liabilities.

And the summation? Perfect:

This is the smoking gun about who Donald Trump really is, and what his presidency really is.
