Trump Claims He ‘Called Home’ to Melania About Missed Cemetery Trip — There’s One Major Problem Though

President Donald Trump is doing damage control again by denying reports that say he skipped a visit to a World War I memorial in France in 2018 because he was worried about his hair and that he considered the cemetery to be “filled with losers.” His comments were first reported by The Atlantic.

And Trump is feeling the heat now that these comments have come back to haunt him and is telling reporters he called Melania at home to tell her he was upset about not being able to visit the cemetery. At the time the White House blamed bad weather for the canceled visit, The Mercury News reports.

“I called home, I spoke to my wife and I said, ‘I hate this,” Trump said. “I came here to go to that ceremony.’ And to the one that was the following day, which I did go to. I said I feel terribly. And that was the end of it.”

But Trump remembers things “terribly” here. Melania wasn’t “at home.” She was with him and was also scheduled to visit the cemetery.

According to a readout from the first lady’s office at the time:

“Due to inclement weather, the First Lady and President were unable to visit the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial in Belleau, France.”

Later that evening the First Couple attended a dinner hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.

After the decision to cancel the visits, White House aides apparently didn’t tell Trump that this wouldn’t play well, and he later blamed then-White House Chief of Staff Gen. John Kelly and Zach Fuentes, one of Kelly’s top aides for the clumsy situation. One person who knew of the discussions in the aftermath said Trump accused the two of “f*cking him” by not anticipating the impending fallout.

Aides also reported at the time that Trump made no real effort to attend the ceremony after he was told he couldn’t fly there in the helicopter and that traveling by motorcade would be a logistical challenge. Kelly was tapped to attend the ceremony and Trump spent the day doing the things we’ve come to expect him to do: Sitting in front of the television in the U.S. ambassador’s home, according to people familiar with the occasion.

It will be interesting to see if Trump manages to wiggle out of this lie. Pretty sad that he can’t remember his own wife was there with him. What does that tell you about this marriage?
