Trump Campaign Gets Desperate and Sends Out Ivanka to Win Over Suburban Women in Last-Ditch Effort

This just in: Here’s a story that fits well within the “that’s never gonna happen” category. If there were such a category. It seems the Trump campaign is making one last-ditch effort to win back suburban women who have abandoned Donald Trump as if he were the Hindenburg on that fateful night when it crashed and burned all those decades ago.

The campaign is doing this by sending out Ivanka Trump hither and yon to engage in question-and-answer sessions, Politico reports. She’s done this while appealing on behalf of dear old dad some 17 times in the past six weeks. Ivanka is quite the dedicated daddy’s girl, she is. She’s posed with kids in Halloween costumes at local businesses, she’s brought along cider and doughnuts. On some occasions, she’s even rolled out bread dough for baking.

Her brothers Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, and her sister-in-law Lara Trump are being trotted out to stoke the conservative fires but Ivanka is being used in the eleventh hour of the campaign to appeal to swing voters, most especially the white, college-educated women who backed Trump in 2016.

But let me tell you, while people like Ivanka Trump and Mercedes Schlapp, a senior adviser for the Trump campaign like to pour it on a little thick, that ship has sailed.

Even so, Schlapp has this to say:

“As a working mother who has dedicated her career to the improvement of women’s lives, Ivanka intrinsically understands the issues facing American families today,” she said. “Ivanka Trump can speak to President Trump’s success from the perspective of both a policy adviser and close family member — a remarkably effective combination on the campaign trail.”

While Ivanka has visited 10 battleground states — Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nevada, and Arizona, and plans to visit additional battleground states in the run-up to the election, political analysts have voiced skepticism that these last-minute efforts will do much to sway women voters.

“The reality is that women voters are looking at the substance of what’s happened,” said Debbie Walsh, director of the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University. “It’s kind of late, three weeks out, to try to suddenly to be having a different tone and tenor. I don’t think she alone can make up for what women have been seeing the last four years.”

Politico notes:

“The president has spent nearly four years pushing policies that have not polled well with the voting blocs his daughter is now trying to win over — everything from his crackdown on immigrants crossing the southern border illegally to his uneven response to the coronavirus pandemic.”

Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) threw further ice water on Trump’s attempts at winning back suburban women voters, noting the president has done things that are hard for most of us to forget.

“In the end, suburban voters generally and suburban women, in particular, are paying very close attention to what the president is saying and doing, not just recently, but over four years,” Casey said in an interview. “No surrogate can undo that. They know exactly what he has done and not done.”

While we know he’s pleaded for us to do him a “favor” and to please “like him,” we remember way too much to ever do that. So not only has this ship sailed, it’s sunk.
