Michelle Obama: Trump’s Racist Lies About My Husband Put My Family in Danger

In a recent Instagram post, former First Lady Michelle Obama reflected on some unpleasant memories and urged American leaders to make certain there is a “smooth transition of power” between President Donald Trump and President-Elect Joe Biden.

Both Michelle, 56, and her husband, former President Barack Obama helped Trump transition after he won the 2016 election, and in her lengthy post she added they worked to familiarize the Trump administration with the tasks ahead, in the same way that “George and Laura Bush had done for us.” The Obamas provided meetings and “detailed memos” to Donald and Melania Trump, sharing what they had learned during Obama’s two terms, USA Today reports.

“I have to be honest and say that none of this is easy for me,” Michelle wrote. “Donald Trump had spread racist lies about my husband that had put my family in danger. That wasn’t something I was ready to forgive. But I knew that for the sake of our country, I had to find the strength and maturity to put my anger aside.”

She recalled sitting down with Melania Trump, who asked her questions about “heightened security” in the position and wanted to know what it was like raising children at the White House.

Obama essentially had to swallow whatever misgivings she may have had.

“I knew in my heart it was the right thing to do — because our democracy is so much bigger than anybody’s ego,” she noted. “Our love of country requires us to respect the results of an election even when we don’t like them or wish it had gone differently — the presidency doesn’t belong to any one individual or any one party. To pretend that it does, to play along with these groundless conspiracy theories — whether for personal or political gain — is to put our country’s health and security in danger. This isn’t a game.”

But this is exactly what Trump and his supporters have been doing — spewing nutball evidence-free conspiracy theories. He’s acting as if he thinks the presidency belongs to him and him alone. He’s filed one lawsuit after another to prompt recounts even though Biden went well past the necessary 270 electoral votes on November 7. There’s no law that requires a president to concede and since Trump has no grace or human decency, he may indeed continue to refuse to concede.

And Michelle Obama probably understands Trump more than she cares to, so she’s calling for political leaders and everyday Americans to step up.

“I want to urge all Americans, especially our nation’s leaders, regardless of party, to honor the electoral process and do your part to encourage a smooth transition of power, just as sitting presidents have done throughout our history,” she said in conclusion.

Indeed, as the U.S. continues to be ravaged by a deadly virus that Trump has done virtually nothing about, it’s important to help President-elect Joe Biden to step up.
