Donald Trump Wins ‘Loser of The Year’ Award From Europe’s Biggest News Magazine

Der Spiegel is Europe’s most popular news magazine, with a weekly circulation of 845,000 subscribers and it just delivered President Donald Trump what may be the biggest smackdown he’s ever been dealt. In the form of a 3,300-word report that labeled him “The loser of the year.”

The magazine, established in 1947 excoriated Trump for his response to the coronavirus pandemic, his refusal to admit he’s lost the election, and it smacked him for a few other good reasons, Newsweek reports.

In the lengthy piece, published online Thursday and headlined in German “Der Verlier des Jahres,” writers Roland Nelles and Ralf Neukirch describe Trump’s refusal to acknowledge President-elect Joe Biden’s victory as “not surprising” because “nothing is normal under Trump.”

“Instead, he speaks of massive electoral fraud, although there is no evidence for it,” they note. “Trump’s presidency ends as it began. Without decency and without dignity.”

Nelles and Neukirch also note that Trump has torn a deep chasm in the U.S., and he didn’t do this by accident.

“This country is more divided than ever since the times of the Civil War. This is not a by-product of Trump’s politics, it is their goal,” they conclude, noting that “permanent conflict is part of his strategy… he does not even give the impression that he is the president of all Americans.

The protests and counter-protests following the police killing of George Floyd and the growth of the Black Lives Matter movement signify that this is “now the time to unite the country,” Der Spiegel reports, adding that instead “Trump is fueling the conflict.”

“He sends federal troops to Portland, although the Governor of Oregon is against it,” Der Spiegel notes. “He blames the ‘Antifa’ for the violence and avoids setting himself apart from right-wing extremist militias.”

Nelles and Neukirch also criticized Trump’s dismissal of a string of officials in his administration, his impeachment trial, and the GOP senators who jump whenever he tells them to.

“The formerly proud party of Abraham Lincoln has degenerated into a collection of spineless yes-men.”

The left-leaning publication offered brief commendations — the record number of votes he received in the election, gains by Republicans in the House of Representatives, and the possibility that the GOP may successfully maintain its majority in the Senate (we hope not.)

Despite this, the magazine suggested this presidency will always be remembered for its handling of the pandemic, especially as it “mercilessly exposes Trump’s weaknesses” that were propelled by a “disdain for science and expertise.”

It kind of hits that nail on the head, don’t you think?

The writers also excoriated Trump for playing down the pandemic and politicizing it, noting that he “refuses to take responsibility in the worst health crisis the country has suffered for one hundred years. He is complicit in the deaths of numerous Americans.”

Now that may be the understatement of the year.
