South Dakota’s Trumpy Governor Wields Flamethrower in Instagram Post and Social Media is Divided

Kristi Noem, the Republican South Dakota governor who helped COVID-19 gain a major foothold in the state by refusing to mandate that masks be worn while holding a huge rally for President Donald Trump during a July 4 celebration, and by holding a huge biker rally that brings as many as 250,000 people to the area where practically no one wore face coverings, now has a simple Christmas wish.

Of course, it has nothing to do with encouraging people to stay safe and healthy during the holidays. That just wouldn’t be her.

No, instead she posed with a flamethrower and posted the photo on Instagram, coyly suggesting she’d like one for Christmas.

“Is it too late to add something to my Christmas list?” she asks.

More than 31,000 people have since “liked” her post, which attracted hundreds of comments.

In response to her post, Ian Fury, a communications specialist for Noem noted she doesn’t own such a gadget.

“To be clear, it’s not her flamethrower,” he told USAToday.

He didn’t say who owned the contraption or where the photo was taken.

The photo is most likely an attention-grab for Noem, who rose to prominence nationwide while campaigning for Trump and by pretty much doing nothing to abate the pandemic. But it’s also brought her some probably unwanted attention from the media thanks to her habit of traveling widely outside South Dakota while coronavirus cases galloped across the country. Most recently, she headlined an appearance at a $2,000 per plate event hosted by Turning Point, a right-wing group, at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, in Palm Beach, Florida.

More than a few Twitter users had their own thoughts about Noem hoisting the flamethrower. More than a few thought her post was cool or “hot” or whatever your favorite vernacular might be.

But fortunately, for every ignorant, Trump-supporting fool, there are a few among the Twitterati who know a good smackdown when they deliver one.
