Election 2020

Kevin McCarthy Had ‘Screaming Match’ with Trump and Demanded His Mob Leave the Capitol

It took a major insurrection on his behalf for President Donald Trump to finally concede to President-elect Joe Biden but according to one Punchbowl News reporter, Trump stubbornly refused to condemn the rioters who stormed the Capitol in his name, Raw Story reports.

In a Friday appearance on CNN, Punchbowl reporter Anna Palmer said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) grew extremely angry at Trump for refusing to call off his dogs (aka protesters — apologies to actual dogs) during a phone call Wednesday.

“McCarthy got into a screaming match with the President on Wednesday, as the House was under siege and the Capitol was, you know, being attacked,” Palmer said. “He wanted him to denounce the mob and tell them to leave and the president at first refused.”

For Palmer, what made this noteworthy is the fact that McCarthy has long been one of Trump’s staunchest allies among the GOP leadership and this could make it tougher for Republicans to remain intact as a caucus as the Democrats continue with their impeachment efforts against Trump.

Despite the earlier fireworks, McCarthy is trying to discourage Democrats from attempting impeachment proceedings, Axios reports. Perhaps McCarthy is worried about how this situation is going to impact his party. His rhetoric certainly indicates that.

“Impeaching the president with just 12 days left in his term will only divide our country more,” he noted in a statement Friday. “I have reached out to President-elect Biden today and plan to speak to him about how we must work together to lower the temperature and unite the country to solve America’s challenges.”

“United we can deliver the peace, strength, and prosperity our country needs,” he added. “Divided, we fail.”

But Democrats are going forward with their impeachment efforts and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has called on Trump to resign “immediately,” as she continues to urge Vice President Mike Pence and the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment.

This would be the first time in U.S. history that a president has been impeached twice. The Senate would, however, need to hold an impeachment trial and convict Trump of wrongdoing by achieving a two-thirds majority in order to remove him from office.

In a letter to her House colleagues on Friday, Pelosi wrote, “Nearly fifty years ago, after years of enabling their rogue President, Republicans in Congress finally told President Nixon that it was time to go … Republicans in Congress need to follow that example and call on Trump to depart his office — immediately.”

“If the President does not leave office imminently and willingly, the Congress will proceed with our actions.”

So Republicans need to follow their own advice — the very same advice they tell struggling Americans who need help.

“Pull yourselves up by the bootstraps.”

Get the job done. That means you too, Kevin McCarthy.
