Melania Trump has achieved an unenviable distinction — according to a new poll, she’s the least popular first lady ever, The Hill reports.

It seems to me that one would have to work hard to be this unpopular but apparently for Melania it was easy. At any rate, according to the CNN-SSRS survey, released Sunday, the former First Lady received a whopping 47 percent unfavorability rating. She’s staggeringly unpopular; the average unfavorability rating before Trump stood at 21 percent. Another controversial first lady, Hillary Clinton, left the White House with a 39 percent favorability rating among those who were polled in 2001.

So how did Melania arrive at this milestone? Well, she’s not exactly a paragon of warmth, despite her Be Best campaign but I can think of a number of things that might have earned her this distinction: Her seeming inability to extend even the merest welcome to new First Lady Jill Biden; her garish and creepy Christmas decorations, her destruction of the White House’s beloved Rose Garden and it’s irreplaceable history; her obvious disdain for immigrant children, because after all, she wore that lousy coat inscribed with “I Don’t Really Care Do U?” scrawled on the back, while at the same time saying that it’s okay that these kids were torn away from their parents and are now happy because they have a bed and a cabinet for their clothes. Because yeah, that’s the kind of excuses Melania has made for her racist behavior.

Melania also received heavy criticism for waiting nearly a week to comment publicly on the deadly riots at the Capitol building earlier this month. In a statement, she said she was “disappointed and disheartened” by the violent protests caused by the pro-Trump demonstrators who stormed the Capitol and interrupted Congress’s certification of Biden’s win.

She was merely “disappointed and disheartened?” People died in this attack. That’s a chilly response. I suspect this is what bothers most people about Melania Trump. She can seem downright cold-hearted, and she really never went out of her way to dispel this. Frankly, after eight years of Michelle Obama’s warmth, wit, and caring, Melania has been an icy shock. It’s not really all that surprising that she’s widely unpopular.

The CNN-SSRS poll, conducted Jan. 9 through Jan. 14, sampled 1003 respondents and it has a margin of error of 3.7 percentage points.
