GOP Hypocrisy

Trump Redirected a Navy Ship from Seattle to L.A. Because Newsom Said Nice Things About Him

If you’ve ever wondered just how shallow former president Donald Trump is, here’s a clue: He reportedly redirected a naval hospital ship from Seattle to Los Angeles because California governor Gavin Newsom said “nice things” about him.

Late last March, the U.S. naval vessel Mercy arrived in Los Angeles to help treat non-coronavirus patients as the COVID outbreak severely strained the city’s healthcare resources, The Independent reports. About 77 Los Angeles residents received treatment on the ship before it made its way to San Diego.

But there’s an interesting anecdote about this that ABC White House correspondent Jonathan Karl shares in his new book Front Row At The Trump Show. The vessel was originally deployed in Seattle to lessen the burden on hospitals struggling under the heavy load of COVID-19 patients.

But then-President Trump’s nose was out of joint because Washington governor Jay Inslee was critical of the administration’s response to the COVID outbreak, so the former president decided to suggest that the ship make its’ way to Los Angeles because Newsom had apparently complimented him.

“Don’t you think we should send it to California?” Trump allegedly asked. “Gavin has been saying such nice things about me.”

Right after that, it’s reported that Trump called Inslee a “showboater” and a “real jerk.”

Inslee repeatedly chastised Trump for downplaying the severity of the deadly outbreak. That led Trump to call him a “snake” after the governor demanded that he stick to science when talking about the pandemic.

“I just received a call from @VP Mike Pence, thanking Washington State for our efforts to combat the coronavirus,” Inslee wrote in a tweet. “I told him our work would be more successful if the Trump administration stuck to the science and told the truth.”

Former Trump official Olivia Troye shared excerpts from Karl’s book, which was published by Politico Playbook, tweeting:

“Lives were at risk. Politics at play. He didn’t care. The Navy Mercy ship for #covid relief was being used as a political pawn while we were trying to get help to the states ASAP. This happened,” she wrote. “This is fact. When MAGA #Republicans run for office on the Trump train — remember this.”

By all means, let’s hope folks do indeed remember.
