Best News of the Week: NFL Players Offering Tweeting Carl Nassib with Firm Support for Coming Out

So, how far have we come?

For those of us who came of age in the 90s, it was – at the time, impossible to believe that gay rights would ever be elevated to this kind of supportive acceptance in society and especially the NFL, supposedly the most “manly” sport out there. Even if it is far too late.

To the extent that people want to hold on to the whole “man’s man” thing, try to imagine the strength it must take for an NFL player to decide he’s going to come out as the first active player. Some players have come out after they retired and that is positive, but nowhere near as brave. They don’t have to face teammates in the locker room. Some of those teammates are more sophisticated and open than others.

So this is highly encouraging and we’re putting the response below:

The $100,000 dollar donation to a cause that prevents youth/teen suicide among LGBTQ people is smart and generous. It alerts others who, again, may not be as sophisticated, that there is a severe cost to the discrimination. Strange as it may seem, many of those people brought up in different environments may not actually know that suicide in LGBTQ youth is a massive problem.

First up, his own coach put out an immediate and supportive tweet:

Some pointed out that gay people are not “different.” But we believe that what his coach actually means is that the differences are in being the first to come out in the NFL, which is “different” enough. Besides, even if the language is a bit off, it pales in comparison to supportive words. He didn’t have to say anything.

His team supported him, though a “full team” doesn’t mean quite as much as an individual, and they sort of had to do it, but that’s actually a good thing in and of itself:

JJ Watt is one of the most respected players in the NFL:

Warren Moon, Hall of Famer:

The NFL itself:

And many more. The best news of the week, so far, it is great that the country has come so far.
