Meghan McCain Threatens to Quit Twitter and the Entire Internet Rejoices With Glee

During a recent panel discussion surrounding Idris Elba’s call for everyone on social media to be verified in order to stop anonymous “cowards” from spouting racist bile, the View’s Meghan McCain did what she always does: Make it about herself by saying she may leave Twitter on the same day she leaves The View.

Elba was spurred to do this in response to the racist abuse that’s been hurled at UK soccer players Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and Jadon Sancho since the Euro 2020.

“People in the public eye get verified on social media,” he wrote in an Instagram post. “The process of verification requires them to prove their IDENTITY, so everyone knows WHO is speaking. SOCIAL MEDIA COMPANIES SHOULD MAKE THIS MANDATORY FOR ALL USERS.”

During the panel discussion, McCain noted she was onboard with Elba’s remarks and expanded that to note that women are often victimized anonymously and that this is something that also needs to change, Uproxx reports. She definitely made some salient points but then, as she typically does, she steered the conversation in her own direction, noting she may drop her Twitter account.

“I have a lot of followers on there,” she said. “It’s been an incredible platform to talk to people and read the news. Definitely, in the past year since the pandemic, it’s become a noticeably more darker, uglier place — even in the cesspool of social media that’s already been dark. I do think it’s disturbing to see the things lauded at everyone, anyone.”

At the end of her portion of the segment, McCain noted:

“Stay tuned. When I leave the show, I may quit Twitter on the same day for this reason.”

More than a few members of the Twitterati were not disappointed to hear this. Certainly, her comments about women being victimized on social media were on point, but many of us aren’t going to forget her arrogant right-wing commentary anytime soon.

And apparently on Monday McCain needed to get this off her chest:

“Some of you a**holes who spend your pathetic existing (sic) writing and distorting what I say every SINGLE day on the view really better start thinking of an exit strategy on how you’re gonna get your clicks and hits when I’m gone in 3 weeks,” she tweeted Monday.

Somehow I’m sure we’ll all manage.
