GOP Hypocrisy

Melania Was Quite Annoyed at Kristi Noem’s Constant Begging to be Invited to WH Christmas Parties

After she and her husband, former President Donald Trump contracted COVID-19, Melania Trump made serious efforts to prevent superspreader events at the White House and was not happy when Governor Kristi Noem (R-S.D.), begged for an invite because, in her view, Noem was too reckless in handling the pandemic.

That’s according to a report by Wall Street Journal senior White House reporter Michael Bender, according to the Dakota Free Press. But many of her efforts were apparently all for naught:

“But even after Trump lost the election, Melania couldn’t stop the round of traditional holiday parties that take place in December,” Bender writes in his book Frankly, We Did Win This Election: The Inside Story of How Trump Lost. “Night after night the White House was packed with guests, many of them not wearing face masks as seen in the selfies they posted to social media.”

She successfully whittled the invite lists down from 1000 to 200, but Bender noted “this just seemed to make all of the invites all the more desirable.”

This may be why Noem was so persistent in wanting to attend several Christmas parties and refused to take ‘no’ for an answer, The Daily Mail reports.

“Fine,” Melania retorted, per Bender’s book. “You know what? If she wants to get COVID that bad, that’s up to her.”

Melania’s concerns are understandable since she, her husband, and their son Barron all tested positive for COVID in October 2020. Numerous others also tested positive thanks to several events held at the White House. She was definitely not on board with throwing an election night party either and told then-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows ‘no’ three times.

The event was originally planned to be held at the Trump International Hotel, a few blocks away from the White House but plans for that were scuppered because Washington, D.C.’s COVID regulations prohibit gatherings of more than 50 people. Plus, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser was still angry about Trump’s Rose Garden event for his Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett because it soon became known as a superspreader event after several guests tested positive for COVID.

“We’ll be talking to our licensee, which is the hotel,” Bowser said at the time.

So then Meadows turned back to Melania and told her the event would have to be held at the White House since it was exempt from D.C. regulations. Holding it at the hotel could have resulted in fines or other penalties.

“I’m not comfortable with it,” she said and told Meadows no. So Meadows contacted Jared Kushner, who served as a senior counselor in the administration. He presented Trump with the situation and Trump called her while flying from a rally in Michigan to one in Wisconsin. At that point, Melania seemed to realize she just wasn’t going to win.

“This is your night,” Melania said, according to Bender. “Do what you’re going to do. You’re going to do it anyway.”

Melania deserves a little credit for trying to keep others from getting sick. Too bad her husband is so ignorant of science, ignorant of what medical specialists were telling people. She’s obviously smarter than her husband, but she’s still culpable, in part for the damage he’s done.

I’m not going to let her get off that easily.
