Americans Outraged After Trump Says Haitian Migrants Will Brings AIDS into the Country

It is one of the oldest, most disgusting, tropes out there. Using the “dirty, diseased immigrant” description as a way to seal borders and deny rights to those same immigrants, or in this case, refugees.

This is particularly sad in the case of refugees, people fleeing dangerous or devastating conditions in their home nation. International law requires the wealthier, freer, safer, countries provide refugees safe living conditions at least until the dangerous circumstances in their own country have abated.

Republicans are not interested in international law, nor are they interested in the dangerous circumstances from which these people are fleeing. Republicans just know that they don’t want these people here.

Last night, Trump spoke to Sean Hannity about the “big problems” going on at the border. We certainly do have big problems at the border, most of which were caused by Trump’s reckless and inhumane treatment of refugees, creating a backlog that is overloading the system. Trump, however, has a unique spin on why immigrants would want to leave Haiti. AIDS. He believes people are fleeing Haiti in order to get medications from the United States:

There is a reason nobody talks about AIDS with respect to Haitian refugees and that is because they are not fleeing Haiti because of AIDS. They are fleeing Haiti because the leader was assassinated a couple of months ago, they had a devastating earthquake, and they worried about a brutal new government.

Twitter couldn’t be contained in its anger over the overt racism:

Yes, it is fear-mongering. It is about finding more and better reasons to hate the idea of letting new brown and black people into this country.
