GOP Sen. John Barrasso (Wyo.) is a Trump supporter of the worst stripe and he seems to have it in for President Joe Biden. Just a few days ago he criticized Biden’s social spending plan, The Build Back Better Act “Alice In Wonderland” logic, and said Biden was like “The Mad Hatter,” according to The Hill.

You may recall that last June, The Hill also reported Barrasso said he wanted to make Biden a “one-half term president” in 2022 by ensuring Democrats “no longer have complete control in Washington,” The Hill reported at the time.

“I’m looking forward to a very successful 2022,” Barrasso said during a discussion held by The Ripon Society (a Centrist Republican Think Tank) at the time.

“I want to make Joe Biden a one-half term president, and I want to do that by making sure they no longer have the House, the Senate and White House,” Barrasso said.

So that, of course, led The Hill to ask Laura Mengelkamp, the senator’s communications director if Barrasso was advocating for Biden to be removed from office before his first term ends.

Her response?

Barrasso, she said, was referring to the GOP winning back the House and Senate next year. That would remove Democratic control of Washington and make it easier for Republicans to win the White House during the next general election cycle.

“Sen. Barrasso’s remarks discussed his work to make sure Republicans take both the Senate and the House in 2022, which would be the best way to effectively stop President Biden from moving his liberal agenda post-midterms, and position Republicans to win the White House in 2024,” Mengelkamp said.

Barrasso also said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) also made similar remarks about wanting to ensure former President Barack Obama was a one-term president as the 2010 midterm elections loomed.

“Mitch McConnell came under a lot of criticism for saying at one point he wanted to make sure that Barack Obama was a one-term president,” Barrasso said.

While McConnell’s efforts certainly made things more difficult for Obama, that whole one-term president thing didn’t quite work when you consider that Obama went on to serve a second term. That seems lost on Barrasso.

In response to Barrasso’s remarks White House deputy press secretary, Andrew Bates wrote in a statement to The Hill that “Biden looks forward to continuing to deliver for the American people, continuing to make government work for them again, and continuing to bring our country together — after having reduced cases of the worst public health crisis in over a century by 90 percent, signed historic economic legislation that helped fuel unprecedented job growth for any administration’s first 100 days in office, protected American’s healthcare, and restored our leadership and competitiveness in the world.”

Insider notes the economy under Biden is in fact, breathing a sigh of relief. Other outlets like CNN and Yahoo Finance, note that while things aren’t perfect, the economy is definitely in better shape than it was a year ago.

But Barrasso is such a supporter of former President Donald Trump that earlier this month he simply refused to criticize Trump for the recently revealed comments he made about former Vice President Mike Pence, ABC News reports.

In an interview on Nov. 14 with host George Stephanopoulos during ABC’s This Week, the anchor referred to comments Trump made when he was interviewed by ABC News Chief Washington Correspondent Jonathan Karl. During that interview, Trump defended those who purportedly called for violence against Pence as the insurrection against the Capitol building raged on Jan. 6 and people chanted “h*ng Mike Pence.”

During the interview, which Karl details in his book Betrayal: The Final Act of The Trump Show, the former president said he wasn’t worried whether Pence was safe because he “thought he was well-protected.”

“The people were very angry,” Trump told Karl. At that point Karl reminded him that rioters were chanting “h*ng Mike Pence.”

But Trump decided to beat the “fraudulent election” dead horse again.

“Because it’s common sense — how can you — if you know a vote is fraudulent, right, how can you pass on a fraudulent vote to Congress?”

So Stephanopoulos played the audio of Trump’s interview for Barrasso and asked “can your party tolerate a leader who defends m*rderous chants against his own vice president?”

Barrasso continually tried to sidestep the question but Stephanopoulos wasn’t going to be deterred.

“Well, we just played the chants,” he said. “I’m asking you, if you believe — if you can tolerate the president saying, “h*ng Mike Pence is common sense.”

“It’s not common sense,” Barrasso responded, still refusing to chide Trump for his comments when prodded by Stephanopolous.

“I don’t agree with President Trump on everything,” the senator said. “I agree with him on the policies that have brought us the best economy in our — my lifetime. And I’m going to continue to support those policies and continuing to work to stop what Joe Biden is doing to this country, which I believe is almost irreversibly bad.”

But as The Washington Post notes, the economy was anything but perfect under Trump. Part of that was due to the pandemic, and Trump’s lack of doing anything useful while this tragedy was unfolding didn’t help.

It’s unclear what planet Barrasso is from but it’s obviously not from the one called Reality.
