Election 2020

Trump to Commemorate January 6th With a News Conference from Mar-a-Lago

On a day that was full of tragic consequences for American democracy, a terrible day inspired by former President Donald Trump, that same ex-president will once again be trying to call attention to himself. As is typical for Trump he’ll be portraying himself as the victim.

In a statement Tuesday, Trump announced he will be holding a press conference at Mar-a-Lago on Jan. 6, the one-year anniversary of the attack he incited on the U.S. Capitol building, The Hill reports.

“Why isn’t the Unselect Committee of highly partisan political hacks investigating the CAUSE of the January 6th protest, which was the rigged Presidential Election of 2020?” Trump wrote in his statement announcing the news conference.

Trump then cited several states where he asserted “the numbers don’t work for them, or even come close.” Even though, (cough cough) that claim has been thoroughly debunked. Even the National Academy of Sciences of The United States of America weighed in on this in November, and this is one agency Trump will never be intelligent enough to go up against.

Then Trump played a game of switcheroo, referring to last year’s presidential election as “the insurrection,” instead of the day of the actual insurrection when a surly mob of his supporters overran the Capitol and tried to subvert the certification of the electoral results.

“I will be having a news conference on January 6th at Mar-a-Lago to discuss all of these points, and more,” Trump said. “Until then, remember, the insurrection took place on November 3rd, it was the completely unarmed protest of the rigged election that took place on January 6th.”

Okay, I know that Trump is delusional but has he lost his mind completely? NPR noted earlier this year that federal charges against the alleged rioters show that some were armed with stun guns, pepper spray, baseball bats, flagpoles, which were used as clubs. Not only that but one suspect allegedly planted pipe bombs at the headquarters of the Democratic and Republican parties on the eve of the riot.

Saner people will commemorate this day in a more responsible fashion.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced earlier this week that her office will hold a “prayerful vigil” and a discussion wherein historians will discuss the anniversary of the attack.

The White House will also commemorate the day.

“January 6 was one of the darkest days in our democracy,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said. “It was a day when our nation’s Capitol was under attack and I think there’s no question you’ll see us commemorate that day.”

The Hill notes that more than 700 people have been charged in connection with the failed siege when Trump supporters stormed the Capitol and surged past police officers. Dozens of others have since been subpoenaed to appear before the House select committee for questioning.

Numerous people lost their lives during this “completely unarmed” siege and scores of people were injured. Hopefully, the White House will have additional security around the Capitol in case more Trump-supporting numbskulls get any more ideas.
