On Thursday, Trump reiterated his open challenge to anyone who will take it to debate him publicly about the fairness of the 2020 election, but so far his request has not been met in a very serious manner. Trump released a statement trying to goad literally anyone into taking the bait, saying, “Has it been at all noticed that I offered to debate anybody, on television or otherwise, about the RIGGED Presidential Election of 2020.”

Trump’s insistence about the rigged election continues as interest in the topic starts to wane, and even his most extreme far right supporters are starting to turn to other conspiracy theories. Yet, the former president is using what little fame he has left to try and convince any media outlet to give him airtime, which he brags will help booster their ratings.

The first time Trump brought up the idea of such a debate was back in November, but it is over a month later and there is still no one interested enough to actually commit. Now, the fact that Trump is still insisting on being the center of attention and casting doubt around the 2020 election could possibly mean he is trying to win back the total support of all his followers in preparation for a possible candidacy in the 2024 election.

Washington Post’s Phillip Bump said that everyone should “remember why Trump is making this request”, and followed up with the explanation that he wants the American public to fully believe that there was criminal activity involved in the 2020 election results. This is something that all major reporters and news outlets are going to have to take into consideration if Trump does decide to run in 2024, because more than ever there needs to be an emphasis on unbiased and fact based journalism.
