California Official Put on Leave and Wife Fired After Getting Caught on Video Spewing Vile Anti-Asian Hate

The trend of government officials caught on video saying racist or offensive things continued this week when an official from Coronado, San Diego, was placed on leave for a video of him and his wife using racist language. Roger Miller, who worked as the director of recreation and golf services, and his wife Sandra, were seen arguing with someone who was not caught on the camera.

According to the person who uploaded the video, the argument took place in the parking lot of a shopping mall on Saturday. They also added that Roger and Sandra Miller were saying racist things to someone of Asian descent before they started recording. For example, they accused them of being responsible for the spread of the coronavirus.

Roger Miller is not heard saying any racial slurs in the video, but his wife makes several jarringly prejudiced comments, which is why she faced more severe consequences and was fired from her job. She was working at the Linfield Christian School, but they quickly released a statement saying that they had seen the video and had terminated her employment as a consequence.

The social media post that Linfield uploaded read, “The statements made by Ms. Miller do not reflect the beliefs of Linfield, are inconsistent with Linfield’s mission and fail to meet the behavior Linfield expects employees to model for its students.” Mr. Miller’s employer, the city of Coronado, was less specific in their statement, only saying that they were putting an unnamed official on administrative leave because of an ongoing investigation.

The city manager, Tina Friend, released a separate statement saying, “Our city’s culture and values are core to who we are and that culture is based on professionalism, service and respect.” Like the statement from the city, she did not name Roger Miller personally, and other city officials have refused to comment on the incident.
