Ted Cruz Says it Should Be ‘Illegal’ for Biden to Pick a Black Supreme Court Justice

As he habitually does, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is talking out of the wrong end of his body again. He’s being really weird this time, even for him. It seems that on Sunday he suggested it should be “illegal” for President Joe Biden to announce that he’s nominating a Black woman to the Supreme Court without considering White people, according to Raw Story.

I’m not joking. He actually said that. Did he forget he’s of Cuban extraction and that he was born in Canada? Did someone drop him on his head at birth? You’d think that by being Hispanic he’d support this but Biden is doing it so, of course, he’s against it. Apparently in this case up is down and down is up.

“Democrats today believe in racial discrimination, they’re committed to it as a political proposition,” Cruz said in an interview with Fox News host Bill Hemmer. “I think it is wrong to stand up and say we’re going to discriminate, this administration is going to discriminate. What the president said is that only African-American women are eligible for this slot. They said that 94 percent of Americans are ineligible.”

I don’t recall Biden saying this. I think he’s trying to add balance to a Supreme Court that suffers a pretty big imbalance when you consider the fact that we have ultra-right-wing justices like Amy Coney Barrett and Brett Kavanaugh. As it stands there are currently nine justices — with John Roberts serving as the chief justice, followed by eight Associate Justices, according to the Supreme Court of The United States. And as VOA notes the SCOTUS is decidedly right-wing.

Biden’s pick, Ketanji Brown Jackson will help recalibrate the situation.

And the president correctly notes:

“For too long, our government, our courts, haven’t looked like America,” he said. “I believe it’s time that we have a court that reflects the full talents and greatness of our nation with a nominee of extraordinary qualifications, and that we inspire all young people to believe that they can one day serve their country at the highest level.”

Biden also said it was his “honor to introduce to the country a daughter of former public school teachers a proven consensus builder and an accomplished lawyer and distinguished jurist, on one of the nation’s most prestigious courts.”

But Cruz sees it differently.

“I think our country has such a troubled history on race, we ought to move past discriminating based on race,” Cruz told Hemmer. “The way Biden ought to do it is to say I’m going to look for the best justice, interview a lot of people. And if he happened to nominate a justice who was an African-American woman, great. But you know what? If Fox News put a posting, ‘we’re looking for a new host for Fox News Sunday and we will only hire an African-American woman, that would be illegal. Nobody else can do what Joe Biden did.”

I really don’t know where Cruz gets his information but Fox News hires whomever it wants all the time. And while there are a few African-American anchors, the cable news network is a virtual sea of blonde bobbleheads. Cruz’s weird logic of “we have a troubled history regarding race” so let’s throw another doughy-faced White person on the pile to improve the situation is idiotic.

Maybe he’d better go back to his Green Eggs And Ham.
