2022 Midterms

Ex-Trump Spox Humiliates Herself After Proving She Knows Nothing About the District She’s Running to Represent

There’s everyday garden variety embarrassing and then there’s massively, mortifyingly embarrassing, and I can’t help but think that’s how former State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus felt during a recent appearance on Nashville radio earlier this week. She was on hand to participate in a quiz for local congressional candidates to give them the chance to show how much they know about Tennessee’s Fifth Congressional District, the district that the participants would represent, The Independent reports.

It soon became painfully clear that Ortagus didn’t know much.

On the program, Ortagus was asked to name the three interstate highways that run through the district. She didn’t know the answer. She also didn’t know the answers to the following: Which popular country music star owns a popular winery in the district; the name of the popular NASCAR driver who owns a car dealership there; the names of Tennessee’s four living governors, nor did she know the town of Chapel Hil was in the district.

I guess if you’re going to screw up, you may as well do it spectacularly because clearly, that’s what Ortagus did.

Unsurprisingly, she’s the former spokesperson for the State Department under Donald Trump and she’s seeking to represent the Fifth District, which includes parts of Nashville and portions of several surrounding and suburban areas and rural counties, The Independent reports.

Jim Cooper, a Democrat has represented the District since 2003 but isn’t running for reelection thanks to Republican gerrymandering in Nashville as part of the state’s redistricting process that’s been so extreme there may be no room for a single Democratic representative. Even though 65 percent of Davidson County voters supported Joe Biden in the 2020 election.

Ortagus doesn’t even live in the Fifth District and only moved to Tennessee to join a Nashville healthcare firm after leaving the State Department last year.

Trump has endorsed her in February after she announced her candidacy. She’s apparently not beloved by a number of Trump supporters. Politico reports she’s received “serious backlash from die-hard loyalists.” Even though she served in the administration, she’s received heat from his supporters for supporting Jeb Bush during the 2016 Republican primary and because Ruth Bader Ginsburg officiated at her wedding (which seems, well, weird to me.)

But considering her embarrassing performance during this radio show quiz looks like Ortagus had better start boning up on her knowledge of the district she’d be expected to serve if she wins in the 2022 midterm election. If she doesn’t she should be too embarrassed to run. But then, she was in the Trump administration so there’s that.
