Matt Gaetz’s Future Looking ‘Not Good’ After Latest Development, Says Former Federal Prosecutor

Former federal prosecutor Joyce Vance flagged a court order Tuesday sealing a status report in the case of  Joel Greenberg, a Florida tax official who has fallen from grace. Now she’s saying this may prove to be a serious problem for Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) who’s an associate of Greenberg’s Salon reports.

This decision means Greenberg, who pleaded guilty to a number of charges last year, including child sex trafficking. So it’s entirely likely he’ll continue to provide prosecutors with crucial information as a cooperating witness, Vance said.

“This can mean other things, but most often, it means work with a cooperating witness is proceeding & it is productive,” she posted on Twitter. “Not good for Gaetz.”

Gaetz is the subject of an exhaustive, months-long investigation due to allegations that he transported a teen girl across state lines to “perform sex acts,” per Salon. Reportedly Greenberg has told prosecutors he introduced the girl to Gaetz and that they both paid or found ways to compensate other women for sex. Investigators are also allegedly probing whether Gaetz paid any of the women with illegal drugs or funds from his federal campaign account. All of this has the potential to increase Gaetz’s legal liability.

Gaetz, for his part, is being typical Gaetz — continuing to deny the allegations and portraying himself as the victim of a political hit job. He’s really reaching, it seems, so much so that he’s trying to connect the allegations to former President Donald Trump’s first impeachment, while also claiming Trump was also falsely accused. Other reports say that Gaetz’s longtime colleagues are keeping him at arm’s length in anticipation of the investigation drawing to a close. In other words, they are trying to avoid his taint.

According to the report, from Business Insider, “the report notes his colleagues — with the exception of equally controversial Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) — have sidelined him, including not asking him to be a co-sponsor on a bill to legalize cannabis written by Republicans despite the fact that he is a vocal proponent of legalization.”

“Asked about Gaetz from the bill, a cannabis industry source who spoke on condition of anonymity, cited the DOJ investigation,” Business Insider reports, with the source adding “It has been more difficult for him to lead legislative efforts because of the associated issues.”

That’s not all Business Insider’s report says, either. It continues:

“It shows that while Gaetz still has friends in Congress, even his allies are quietly isolating him — or at least not going out of their way to work with him.” It then adds: “Some Republicans, who have never much cared for Gaetz since he entered Congress in 2018, have been privately sneering at him in the months since he legal woes began.”

So the situation is looking dicey for Gaetz. Sounds like it couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
