National Security Analyst Ravages Trump as the ‘Most Incompetent President in Modern History’

In a weekend column for CNN, national security analyst Peter Bergen pointedly noted that Donald Trump’s presidency was four years of “chaos” and that he was completely unsuitable for performing the most important duty a president has — protecting the safety of all Americans.

And Bergan, author of The Cost of Chaos: The Trump Administration and the World, scheduled for release on Tuesday, has a few worries. Trump has, after all, hinted at running again in 2024, and that, combined with polls, suggests that Republican voters might be willing to give him another go. That, he says, “should be of grave concern to Americans still reeling from the Trump years,” per Raw Story’s Tom Boggioni.

Bergen reminds us that when Trump left office he claimed “We will be back in some form” and he suggests critics of the former president should view this as a threat, while conceding “Either way, Trump is indeed back.”

This was Bergen’s jumping-off point to make the case that “Trump was the most incompetent president in modern American history.”

He described Trump’s time in office as a series of “spectacular failures,” and noted that Trump is responsible for the takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban due to his failed negotiations. However, Bergen also reserved a little criticism for Biden.

“The seizure of Afghanistan by the Taliban last year was one of Trump’s disastrous foreign policy legacies. Biden certainly deserves blame for claiming that he was bound by Trump’s 2020 ‘peace deal’ with the Taliban, which really was a surrender agreement to the Taliban in the mordant words of H.R. McMaster, Trump’s former national security adviser. And Biden also deserves blame for the botched execution of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan last summer.”

But Bergen also cites Trump for a number of bad decisions, including his continual criticisms of NATO, which paved the way for Putin to attack Ukraine, and his continually ignoring North Korea’s military build-up while trying to woo Kim Jong-un with his “personal charm.” He also pointed out that the proliferation of  “the Iranian nuclear program took a large step forward as a result of Trump’s ham-handed approach to the Iranians.”

That was how Trump screwed things up internationally, but Bergen notes he was a disaster on a national level as well, especially in his botched response to the Covid-19.

“It was, above all, in his mishandling of the Covid-19 pandemic that Trump revealed his many weaknesses as a leader. First, he never did any homework, meaning his understanding of complex issues, such as how best to mitigate a pandemic, was always cartoonish,” Bergen writes. “Related to Trump’s first failing was his second: He always believed he knew more than the experts about any given subject. Third, Trump always trusted his own gut. This was not likely to produce relevant knowledge or coherent policy. And it didn’t.”

Bergen writes that Trump’s inept handling led to tragic consequences.

“His weak leadership produced grave results: More than 400,000 Americans died from Covid-19 during Trump’s final year in office, which was more than the death toll of all the Americans who had died in wars going back to World War II,” Bergen noted, adding “Many of those deaths could have been avoided with better leadership; Covid mortality in the U.S. was 40 percent higher than the average of other advanced nations such as Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom, according to a report from the medical journal The Lancet.”

“The first duty of the commander-in-chief is the protection of US citizens, and Trump clearly derelict in this duty,” Bergen wrote, and then concluded “In short, Trump was the most incompetent President in American history.”

Let’s hope people remember this when 2024 rolls around. Seems like far too many people, especially Republicans, have short memories.
