The MAGA pols in the GOP found a way to combine their cruelty with politics as entertainment – similar to government by tweet – and they managed to actually turn it around on themselves, with liberals jumping out to help. Texas governor Greg Abbott bussed new migrants from the Texas border and dropped them off near Kamala Harris’s home at the U.S. Naval Observatory, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis flew two airplanes full of migrants and dropped them off at Martha’s Vineyard.

It likely never occurred to either governor that these people may have had plans, jobs lined up (Yes, it’s easy), all that. Regardless, it’s backfiring. From the Daily Beast:

The buses that arrived in Washington, D.C. carried about 100 migrants, Fox News reported, most of whom were nationals from Venezuela, Uruguay, Colombia and Mexico.

Video circulating online from the the scene showed the group of young men, women and children carrying backpacks, pillows and blankets as they chatted outside Harris’ residence with nowhere to go initially.

As word spread of their arrival, however, local immigrant organizations sprung into action. A representative from a charity called Sanctuary DMV came later in the morning and announced that the migrants could temporarily be sheltered at a local church.

The same thing happened in Martha’s Vineyard. From the New York Times:

The migrant group, which included children, arrived on two planes around 3 p.m. without any warning, said State Senator Julian Cyr, a Massachusetts Democrat representing Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. Officials and volunteers from the island’s six towns “really moved heaven and earth to essentially set up the response that we would do in the event of a hurricane,” he said.

As the migrants received Covid-19 tests, food and clothing, there was confusion on the ground about who had sent them to Martha’s Vineyard, a popular getaway for the moneyed and powerful. Migrants said they had started the day in San Antonio, but it was the Florida governor’s office that took responsibility.

Wasn’t it Don Jr. who famously said, “Fck around and find out”? Well, be careful DeSantis and Abbott. Fck around and find out what happens when you send migrants to communities that care about them as people, more so than the MAGA governors. (There are a lot of good people in Florida and Texas that would have done the same, this is on the governors and the MAGAs that hate migrants.)
