FAMILY FEUD: First Lady to Nebraska’s GOP Governor Endorses DEMOCRAT in Heated Congressional Race

Susanne Shore, the wife of Nebraska Republican Governor Pete Ricketts, is taking a decidedly non-Republican path by endorsing the Democrat who’s running to represent the state’s 1st congressional district in November’s general election, The Omaha World-Herald reports.

And she voiced her endorsement of Democrat Patty Pansing Brooks by noting her own efforts to help Nebraska’s children. It’s important, she said, that “those who can’t always advocate for themselves have a person in their corner fighting for them.”

“During my time as first lady, one legislator has proven that she will always use her voice to fight for not only those kids and families, but all Nebraskans — that’s Patty Pansing Brooks,” Shore said in the video, which was posted by Pansing Brooks’s campaign.

Shore is a registered Democrat, so her endorsement isn’t all that surprising. Plus she previously endorsed Pansing Brooks during a June special election to fill the remainder of Rep. Jeff Fortenberry’s term.

U.S. Rep. Mike Flood, a Republican, formerly a state lawmaker from Norfolk won that contest. So he and Pansing Brooks are battling it out to see who will serve a two-year term in Congress. The term begins in January.

Perhaps Shore and Ricketts are the James Carville and Mary Matalin of Nebraska because as I mentioned earlier, Shore is a Democrat while her husband is a Republican who supports Flood. Or maybe their marriage isn’t made in heaven. I don’t know. Either way, the two showed themselves to be polar opposites during the 2016 Presidential election when Shore supported Hillary Clinton while her husband backed Donald Trump.

Flood generally paints Pansing Brooks as too liberal for Nebraska’s 1st District. This district covers a wide-ranging area of 12 Eastern Nebraska counties, including Lincoln, Bellevue, Norfolk, and Columbus. He’s also a sharp critic of the Biden administration and the World-Herald said he continually cites House Speaker Nancy Pelosi when criticizing Pansing Brooks.

But Pansing Brooks, who’s a state legislator from Lincoln, considers herself a consensus builder. She has criticized Flood for his anti-abortion views, including his past support of an abortion ban in the state.

I’m hoping Shore’s endorsement will give Pansing Brooks what she needs to become Nebraska’s next representative for Congress. We do not need another anti-abortion congressperson. They are a dime a dozen. So if women in Nebraska want to be able to make their own choices about their bodies, they’d best get out the vote in November.
