2024 Election

Michael Cohen Explains Why Trump Won’t Run in 2024, and it All Has to Do With Money

Donald Trump’s former attorney and fixer, Michael Cohen said he doesn’t believe Trump will seek another term as president in 2024 because it would “destroy the great grift.

In the months after leaving office, Trump has repeatedly leaned on his supporters, begging for donations to fight his extensive legal woes or to support his efforts to fight the “stolen election.”

According to Queerty, when someone announces they plan to run for office, any money they raise through campaigning or through political action committees (PACs) undergoes strict protocols. In other words, it should really only be used for campaigning. But since Trump isn’t currently a candidate, he can spend nearly all the money he’s raised in any way he likes.

In an interview with MSNBC’s Ali Velshi, Cohen had this to say:

“It would destroy the great grift. If he runs, all the money would then have to go into a campaign fund. People would have to start saying who they are, and it becomes listed. They don’t want that anymore than he wants that.”

“It’s a slush fund,” Cohen added. “He can buy himself a new airplane, or he can use the money to fix his old airplane now.”

Cohen, formerly a fervent Trump supporter, wound up serving a three-year prison sentence for campaign finance violations while he worked for Trump, and for lying to Congress. Over time, he’s turned into one of the former president’s sharpest critics. He’s described Trump’s continual talk of running again as “a bluff.”

In a recent interview with Insider, he added:

“His insatiable need for attention is one reason he continues to flaunt this disingenuous 2024 run. The other is that he’s making more money doing that than anything else.”

Of course, Cohen is also probably earning a few coins as he makes the rounds to promote his new book Revenge: How Donald Trump Weaponized The Department of Justice Against His Critics. In an appearance on NBC News on Friday, he discussed the subpoena Trump has received from the January 6 committee.

Cohen was asked why more people in Trump’s orbit didn’t speak out against him.

“It’s because we’re stupid. For some reason we fell into the cult of Donald J. Trump,” he said.

“There’s a lot of excitement. There’s a lot of energy around it. When he needs something from you, he makes you feel as though you are the single most important person in the world. And that only you are capable of doing something.”

But Cohen has a warning for those who continue to stand up for Trump; especially those who support his more preposterous claims.

“I know the game that you’re playing, and it’s not going to work out for you,” he said. “The same way it didn’t work out for me. You can’t run this playbook, especially against me, because I wrote it.”

A report from Bloomberg News on Sunday, reveals that Trump raised $24 million during the third quarter. That’s a 41 percent increase over the second quarter, according to filings with the Federal Election Commission.

“However, Trump also claims to have spent $22 million on fundraising appeals (SMS messages, adverts, etc.). This means he spent 91 cents for every dollar raised,” Bloomberg notes.

Former Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) appears to back up Cohen’s claims that Trump won’t run in 2024.

“I think Trump’s unelectability will be palpable by then,” Ryan said in an interview with CEO advisory firm Teneo last week. Ryan is the firm’s CEO.

“We all know that he will lose. … We all know that he is so much more likely to lose the White House than anybody else running for president on our side of the aisle, so why would we want to go with that?”

“The only reason he stays where he is is because everybody’s afraid of him,” Ryan added. “They’re afraid of him going after them, hurting their own ambition. But as soon as you get the herd mentality going, it’s unstoppable.

It kind of seems like the Republicans might drive themselves right into a wall here. I suspect many in the GOP are afraid of the former president, and there are those like Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) who happily support him.

In other words, it may turn out to be a good thing for Democrats if Republicans stubbornly support Trump.

Who knows? Certainly not me.
