Election 2020

Conservatives Are Going NUTS Because the Wife of Trump’s Special Counsel Has Links to Michelle Obama

My, my, my. Conservatives are all up in it now that they’ve discovered that the wife of the prosecutor appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland to decide whether Donald Trump will face criminal charges has connections to Michelle Obama.

Indeed, as revealed by The Independent, Katy Chevigny, wife of career Justice Department prosecutor Jack Smith has donated twice to Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign, per the FEC, and worked as a producer of a documentary about Michelle Obama.

Garland tapped Smith earlier this month to decide on former president Donald Trump’s legal fate, practically on the heels of Trump’s announcement that he intends to seek a third White House term.

And now, thanks to media reports, right-wingers have found out that Chevigny worked as a producer on the former first lady’s 2020 documentary Becoming, which was based on her memoir that bore the same name. They are decidedly NOT happy about this turn of events because they think Biden is using this as a political weapon against Trump. The Independent points out that there are no federal laws that require the spouses of federal law enforcement agents, prosecutors, or other officials to be restricted from either campaign activity or political donations.

“You just can’t make this up,” posted Congressman Andrew Clyde on Twitter. “Katy Chevigny, wife of Jack Smith—the special counsel appointed by DOJ to go after President Trump, donated to Joe Biden’s campaign and produced Michelle Obama’s documentary.”

“America cannot stand with a corrupt, two-tiered justice system,” Clyde added. It wasn’t lost on The Independent that Clyde compared rioters who brawled with police on January 6 to “tourists.” Who, he seems to forget, took part in a deadly attack.

Former Trump spokesperson Taylor Budowich also weighed in on Twitter.

“Very interesting… was just told the wife isn’t only a major donor, but also the producer of the gushing Michelle Obama documentary…no wonder Jack Smith accepted this special assignment…The swamp is hard at work!”

Trump and his legal eagles are embroiled in all sorts of fun. The ex-president is still front and center in two probes being run by the Justice Department — one probe concerns his role in the January 6 and efforts to overturn the 2020 election, while the other concerns his retention of classified documents when he left the White House and headed for Mar-a-Lago.

And several within his 2020 legal team are embroiled in a separate probe being run by Georgia prosecutors in Fulton County, over attempts to influence the election results in the state. Then there’s the Trump Organization in New York is dealing with a civil suit launched by the state’s Attorney General Letitia James as well as a criminal tax fraud case brought by Manhattan’s district attorney.

Looks to me like this is the legal equivalent of “are we having fun yet?” Trump, of course, has kept up his mantra that all these legal battles are the doings of his opponents who are doing their best to wreck his reputation and scupper his chances of running for president for the third time.

Seems to me like he’s doing a good job of causing his own problems. But that’s just me.
