2022 Midterms

Georgia’s GOP Lt. Governor Admits That He Just Couldn’t Vote for Herschel Walker

Georgia Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan (R) couldn’t find it in his heart to vote for Herschel Walker in the state’s senatorial runoff election. But he also didn’t vote for Walker’s competition, Democrat Raphael Warnock, either.

“I showed up to vote this morning,” Duncan said in an interview with CNN’s John Berman Wednesday. “I was one of those folks who got in line and spent about an hour waiting, and it was the most disappointing ballot I’ve ever stared at in my entire life since I started voting.”

“I had two candidates that I just couldn’t find anything that made sense for me to put my vote behind, and so I walked out of that ballot box showing up to vote but not voting for either one of them,” he said, per The Hill.

Duncan has long been a critic of former President Donald Trump and he faults Trump for the Republican’s disastrous performance during the midterms in November. He’d previously told CNN that Walker hadn’t gained his vote yet. In the aftermath of the GOP midterm crash-and-burn, Duncan penned an opinion piece urging Walker to make three phone calls to “salvage” his campaign.

While he didn’t seek a second term, Duncan, who’s definitely no Trump supporter, did encourage Walker to call the ex-president and ask him not to campaign during the runoff. And so far, Trump hasn’t jetted to Georgia, which is something he did do during Georgia’s two runoffs that occurred in the previous election cycle.

Duncan also pushed Walker to seek as much support as he could from Georgia Governor Brian Walker (R), who out-performed Walker on November’s ballot, The Hill reports. Kemp is stumping for Walker, even to the point of cutting an ad for his campaign.

Duncan has also suggested that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) could step in as an effective campaign surrogate, but he has yet to do that.

Early voting in the state began in some counties on Saturday and the runoff is happening on Tuesday.

Former President Barack Obama is lending a hand and stumping for Warnock by noting Walker’s lack of political credentials. This is, in fact, Obama’s second round of campaigning for Warnock after the midterms proved too close, and he said Walker proves how unqualified he is “every time he opens his mouth.”

That may very well be the understatement of the year.
