2022 Midterms

Rick Scott Mocked Mercilessly for Claiming Herschel Walker Will ‘Be a Leader’ in the GOP ‘For Years to Come’

Republican Sen. Rick Scott (Florida) refuses to give up on Herschel Walker, even though he lost Georgia’s runoff election against Democrat Raphael Warnock on Dec. 6.

In a statement posted to Twitter last week, he said he believes Walker “will continue to be a leader in our party for years to come,” Business Insider reports.

“Over the last year, I’ve gotten to know Herschel and have seen first hand the movement he built in his home state,” Scott wrote. “Herschel’s story and message inspired millions in Georgia and across the country. While Herschel came up short … I know he will continue to be a leader in our country for years to come.”

As the leader of the campaign arm to elect GOP senators during the 2020 midterm election cycle, Scott stumped alongside Walker in Georgia throughout his campaign, doing everything he could to boost Walker. It was all part of an effort to increase the party’s influence over the legislative agenda in D.C. with President Joe Biden in the White House, Business Insider notes.

But Warnock effectively chipped away at Walker by emphasizing his own successful bipartisan efforts while continually questioning Walker’s fitness for office. Scott and other Republicans fought against this but those efforts were ineffective. And it’s not like Walker didn’t have help. He was endorsed early on by former President Donald Trump and heavily supported by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). Graham continually touted the importance of Walker’s campaign, maintaining that a GOP victory would encourage more minority conservatives to join the party.

I think what likely delivered the blow to Walker’s campaign is that his reputation preceded him. When he began his campaign he said he was flatly against abortion, even in cases where a woman’s life is in danger. Then two women came forward, alleging Walker had paid for their abortions. He firmly refuted their allegations but the damage was done.

Then came revelations that Walker had extra kids he hadn’t revealed to the public, forcing him and his campaign to have to address that issue, and it pushed him off-message as he stumped throughout Georgia trying to convince voters he was politician material.

Oh darn.

And during the November runoff election, Warnock edged out Walker, 49.4% to 48.5% statewide, but because neither candidate hit the required 50 % for victory, this triggered the runoff election on Dec. 6. In which Warnock defeated Walker by 51% to Walker’s 48.6%. Warnock’s strong standing among Democrats and Independents, coupled with the support of moderate Republicans helped seal the deal.

Walker’s loss is now causing many Republicans to rethink this since every GOP candidate in the state — except Walker won their respective seats.

Ooh, that’s gotta hurt.

Democrats are already aware of the implications of this and they have big hopes for 2024’s presidential race. This includes the hope that Biden, should he run, will duplicate his 2020 win in the state.

I’m hoping President Biden makes his announcement soon, and that if he decides not to run, I’m hoping the Democrats will choose someone who’s dynamic, someone who can draw the voters in.

Sometimes hope is a painful thing, but I’m hoping all of this rings true. If Republicans hope to regain anything, they need to come up with more credible candidates than Walker. Rick Scott can keep Herschel Walker. We’ll be just fine without him.
