Just Released FBI Files Reveal Ivana Trump Was Under Top-Secret Counterintelligence Inquiry

Donald Trump’s first wife, Ivana Trump has always been fairly innocuous, but apparently, the FBI didn’t share that belief. In the 1990s, the agency established a counterintelligence inquiry into allegations about her connections to Czechoslovakia, where she was born. That’s according to excerpts from her FBI file that were obtained by Bloomberg News.

The inquiry involved several countries, The Stars and Stripes reports. Legal attaches in Canada and Europe were instructed to glean more information about the circumstances surrounding her emigration from then-Communist Czechoslovakia to Austria and then later on to Canada. They were also instructed to investigate her association with individuals whose names have been redacted from the report. The agency also probed court records of her divorce from Donald Trump.

The files were classified as “secret,” and in one document, dated Feb. 14, 1989, the FBI, relying on information from a confidential source said it “recommended a preliminary inquiry be opened on Ivana Trump.” Per the document, “it is unknown if the allegations stem from jealousies of her wealth and fame. Investigation continuing. The contents of the inquiry were subsequently redacted by the FBI.

It makes me wonder what exactly the FBI was looking for. I don’t know that much about Ivana Trump but she never seemed that controversial to me. So who knows what the heck was really going on here?

And the nature of the FBI’s investigation into Trump’s ex-wife is unknown, but it involved the bureau’s counterintelligence division and was highly sensitive, according to the documents, and the probe lasted two years.

There’s also another file from 1990, that shows the FBI investigating a man connected to Czechoslovakian intelligence who apparently arranged fictitious marriages and is believed to be connected to Ivana Trump, who was Czechoslovakian. There’s scant information on Donald Trump, other than a January 16, 1989, Time magazine article headlined “Trump.”

The files reveal a wellspring of information but I’m going to focus on only a bit of this, otherwise, this story will turn into an encyclopedia.

So here goes:

After Ivana’s death, Bloomberg News filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the FBI for any records it kept on her.

Shortly after the bureau confirmed it had discovered nearly 900 pages of potentially responsive documents but said it may take as long as five years to release them. That didn’t sit right with Bloomberg News, which sued to speed things up. The FBI released 190 pages Monday and said the rest of the records would be released next month.

The bureau maintained documents on Ivana Trump in an investigative file. The bureau is keeping files on literally tens of thousands of Americans and foreigners, largely because they are related to various FBI investigations. Ivana Trump was not accused of wrongdoing.

Documents pertaining to these files are withheld from public disclosure while a person is still alive, and they can contain such things as news clippings, interview summaries, witnesses, and notes. Those privacy rights vanish when a person dies, however.

But the reports on Ivana Trump are studded with redactions and the agency cites national security concerns as the reason for this, along with personal privacy, law enforcement techniques, and procedures. And also because some of that information would uncover the identities of confidential sources and informants.

Ivana Trump has never seemed controversial to me and it seems strange that the FBI would even gather such information. Maybe there’s more to this than we know.

If you want to look through the documents, you can see them HERE.
