Election 2020

Trump Supporters Report Worse Mental Health Conditions Compared to Biden Voters

Those of us who didn’t vote for Donald Trump in the last election won’t be surprised by this, I’m sure. A recent study shows that folks who did vote for Trump in the last election are less likely to report better mental health now than those who supported President Joe Biden, Newsweek reports.

The study found that a majority (87 percent) of the 1,750 American adults who took part in the survey reported that while their general health was “about the same,” 71 percent said their mental health hadn’t gotten significantly better or worse since the election. The study was published in the Political Research Quarterly.

But when the study was broken down between those who voted for Trump and those who voted for Biden, those who voted for Trump were, per Newsweek “less likely to report they now have better mental health, but not general health, than their counterparts who voted for the current president.”

Only seven percent of Trump voters reported better mental health since the 2020 election, whereas 23 percent of Biden supporters reported their mental health was better.

The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and Boston’s Northeastern University, and the results are similar between people who believe and don’t believe Biden fraudulently won the last election. Unless you live on Mars or you’ve been asleep for the last several years you already know Biden legitimately won the election and that one state audit after another has disproven the claims of Trump and his allies that the election was “stolen.”

Newsweek reports:

“A total of 19 percent of people who believed Biden won in 2020 have better mental health, but only 7 percent of those who believe Trump’s false claims that Biden lost the last election reported mental health.”

I can’t help but think there’s something restless and simmering inside these people because their dude didn’t win.

According to an abstract of the study:

“These relationships persist even in the context of a wide range of controls, including demographics, political predispositions, and perceptions of polarization.”

Aaron Weinschenk, the Ben J. and Joyce Rosenberg Professor of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is the lead author of the study, and he told PsyPost that he and fellow researcher Costas Panagopoulos, head of Northeastern’s political science department, wanted to study the effect on people’s mental health following an election that was “incredibly emotionally-charged and contentious nature.”

The researchers found that logistic regression analysis of the survey answers provided evidence to show a “negative and statistically significant effect” and that “Trump voters had worse mental health than Biden voters” after the election.

People who took part in the study were also asked if they believed the political divide between Republicans and Democrats is less, the same, or greater now than before the 2020 election, per Newsweek.

Weinschenk said research suggested those who think the country is now more divided than it was before 2020 were also likelier than their counterparts to report worsening mental health.

“It appears that some features of our current political system (beyond elections) impact health,” he told PsyPost.

I’m sure the mental health issues run deep for Trump supporters since so many easily believe unproven and widely debunked QAnon conspiracy theories. Plus so many of them seem to have deep-seated fears and prejudices that clearly show they may be mentally ill and many hang on to every word Trump ever says.

The findings aren’t surprising at all.
