Anti-LGBTQ Republican Lawmaker Wants to Decriminalize Incest in Kentucky

I don’t know why so many anti-LGBTQ+ are so damned awful. But jeez, so many of them are, and there’s a new creep in town. His name is Nick Wilson, and he’s a State Rep. for Kentucky. He also formerly appeared on Survivor, having appeared on the show’s 37th season in 2018 and returning for the 40th season. Wilson was elected to the House of Representatives in 2022, where he ran unopposed following the retirement of incumbent Regina Huff.

But, as Queerty reports since taking office, he’s gone from awful to awfuller (is that a word?). He’s used his power to attack LGBTQ+ people and has promoted laws that specifically harm queer people, especially queer kids. Indeed, during his first year in office, Wilson, 33, has been one busy weirdo. In true Republican fashion, Wilson voted in favor of a bill that bans gender-affirming care for transgender kids and also bans the discussion of sexual orientation in schools.

But now, as he kicked off his second year in office, he’s embarking on a one-man crusade to decriminalize incest.

I did say Wilson is weird, didn’t I?

On Tuesday, he introduced House Bill 269, which seeks to make sex between first cousins legal in the eyes of the law, but after a wellspring of ridicule, he withdrew the bill less than 24 hours later. Well, good. I hope he’s deeply embarrassed.

Kentucky law is pretty specific about this whole incest thing, and says a person is guilty of incest if they have sex with any person known to be “his or her parent, child, grandparent, grandchild, great-grandparent, great-grandchild, uncle, nephew, niece, brother, sister, first cousin, ancestor, or descendant.” That seems pretty well-defined.

Wilson wanted to excise that “first cousin” bit from the list. But that’s not even the worst part of his dumb idea. He wanted to downgrade incest from a Class C felony to a Class D felony, “unless it is committed with a person who is less than twelve years of age.”

Good grief. No 12-year-old in the world is ready to handle something like this. It’s depressing because I know it happens all the time, but really, no pre-teen should ever have to deal with this. But to Wilson’s warped way of thinking, this should be fine, just fine. Compared to them damned gay people falling in love, or a trans person being treated with dignity by their doctor and everyone else.

Practically as soon as he introduced the bill, social media had a field day with this fool.

Wilson also received a good hiding from New York public defender Eliza Orlins, who blasted his “truly insane” proposal in a two-minute TikTok video. She urged Kentuckians to “flood his office with phone calls.

“Nick Wilson is not only supporting but has introduced a bill that would reclassify incest in the state of Kentucky to not include your own first cousin,” Orlins said. “Kentucky, like so many other places, is facing a lot of issues, and this is Nick’s top legislative priority.”

Frankly, this horrifies me. My poor dad was produced out of incest and he suffered life-long health problems and it’s likely he passed this on to me and my sister. We’re both saddled with serious health problems and I really do think some of this stems from what he suffered.

So Wilson can take his all too typical Republican family values and stuff them…somewhere. I don’t care where.
