2024 Election

Jared Kushner as Secretary of State? People on Social Media Are Howling With Laughter Because it Would NEVER Happen

Despite competition from his former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley, Donald Trump will undoubtedly become the Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential election and now people are speculating about who might end up in his administration (and perhaps they should also be asking for how long, considering his first and hopefully only term as president). Of course, the media has mostly focused on who Trump may select as his running mate. This includes possible choices like Senator Tim Scott, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, disgraced Fox News host Tucker Carlson, and South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem. Of course, we all know that no matter who winds up in that spot, the VP’s influence may be pretty limited, namely because Trump generally places personal relationships and family over someone less personal.

This is probably why Republicans are abuzz over the possibility that Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, may wind up serving as secretary of state if we should be unlucky enough for Trump to secure a second term. Vanity Fair reports a pair of sources are saying prominent Republicans believe Kushner is in the running for the position if Trump wins in November. One source with knowledge of the situation said Republican senators have privately asked Kushner to head up the agency. The source notes that Kushner is “focused on his family and his business,” and plans to wait until late summer to consider this potential nomination.

Of course, should Trump nominate Ivanka Trump’s husband, this can be considered a conflict of interest, but something like this has never stopped him before (since he had racked up an astonishing 3,400 of them as of September 2020). This could present risks and opportunities for the administration and the U.S. owing to Kushner’s financial wheeling and dealing in the Middle East, largely due to Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, which committed $2 billion to his private equity firm. As Vanity Fair notes, this will kick up ethical issues that Congress will more than likely look into during a confirmation hearing. But on the other hand, many senators may look more favorably on Kushner rather than some of Trump’s nutball hardline friends like General Mike Flynn or Richard Grenell, who could stir up Trump’s animosity toward long-standing alliances like NATO.

“It would show Trump is not purely on a revenge tour,” one of the sources said.

Lawmakers may look favorably on Kushner’s experience regarding Middle East diplomacy, especially as the war between Israel and Hamas continues to take its terrible toll. Kushner brokered the Abraham Accords between Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain before leaving the White House. The Biden administration had reportedly been participating in U.S.-led normalization talks between Israel and Saudi Arabia but that all went up in smoke after the October 7 Hamas attack. The second source reports that Kushner has been speaking with Arab leaders in the hopes of convincing Hamas to release the more than 100 hostages still being held in Gaza. Axios reported in December that both Kushner and Ivanka Trump organized a meeting between bipartisan business leaders and the prime minister of Qatar.

NBC News recently reported that the Biden administration is discussing slowing down weaponry sales to Israel to convince the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to acquiesce to long-standing calls by the U.S. to scale back its assault on the Gaza strip.

I don’t know if adding Kushner to the situation will help, nor do I know if Netanyahu can be persuaded to stop Israel’s attacks on innocent Palestinians. All I know is that I hope we’re not headed toward another Trump presidency.

We’re all still recovering from the last one.
