Milwaukee Bar Closing During the RNC So it Doesn’t Have to Serve Crazy Trump Cultists

Donald Trump’s supporters will undoubtedly be partying it up in Milwaukee where the Republican National Convention will be held between July 15 and 18. Trump has reached the 1,215 delegates needed to clinch the GOP presidential nomination and delegates are expected to formally select him as the party’s nominee during the convention.

But as Trump supporters are busy celebrating, there’s at least one bar in the Bay View neighborhood of Milwaukee that’s going to give the festivities a miss. The Mothership, a cocktail bar on Logan Avenue describes itself as a “stupid idiot booze dungeon” on Facebook will be closed during the convention. And that’s even though an estimated 50,000 people will visit the city. But this is one crowd of people that bar owner Ricky Ramirez wants nothing to do with, Newsweek reports.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Ramirez remembered growing up with a “kind of chip on my shoulder” as he faced discrimination for being the child of first-generation immigrants. Even today he lives in a city that is still marked by segregation. And since so many Republicans embrace rhetoric described by critics as racist, and anti-immigrant, Ramirez told the publication that “if there’s an influx of those kinds of people, then I’d rather just be closed.”

“I don’t f****** care who comes into my bar on the norm, but it’s such a heightened event where people are very proudly going to be confirming that Donald Trump’s the nominee for the party again,” he said.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, The Mothership announced that it would close during the week of the RNC, and as you might expect, this sparked praise and condemnation as a result.

The announcement read in part: “I’m not trying to get involved with or actively take money or rent the space out to that tomfoolery HOWEVER if anyone wants bar for private event wedding reception wet tshirt contest idk whatever private people wanna party about do hit up our dms for free to dirt cheap prices we’ll f****** do anything for money except be a part of THAT s*** show.”

Talking to the local newspaper The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Ramirez said he would also close his bar if the Democratic National Convention was being held in the city. And it’s easy to understand that Ramirez has seen a few things.

“The No. 1 reason is we are a bar and alcohol and politics don’t mix,” Ramirez told the newspaper in an email. “It’s a rule in any bar no matter what kind of bar it is, so that’s the simple gist of it.

“We want to represent the entire city and include all, especially our friends who don’t have equal access to this part of city due to the segregation caused by the history of this city. Both parties do little to mitigate the ongoing issues, so screw them both. We don’t want to throw a party for either side because they both suck (in my eyes, the RNC a lot more).”

Wise words. Especially that last sentence.

Some critics have tried to say the decision isn’t fair to The Mothership’s staff, but Ramirez said this was a group decision and employees will be paid during the closure. In the Rolling Stone interview, Ramirez described the backlash that the bar is dealing with as his “Bud Light moment,” since he remembers conservatives boycotting the popular beer over a social media collaboration with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney.

And no, Ramirez doesn’t care about any possible backlash, telling the outlet, “I think a lot of people that have jumped down are throats are people that have never been to our bar.”

Trump supporters are definitely peculiar. They’re all in for a man who’s never walked in their shoes, golden or otherwise. He knows as much about their perceived struggles as he does about calculus. Which is to say he knows nothing. And wants to know nothing. Because he only cares about them if they are useful to him. As long as he’s campaigning for president, these people are useful to him. But no matter who is elected president on Election Day, Trump’s supporters become useless to him in the aftermath.

They will become mere annoyances to him. His supporters are too blinded to see this and I’d feel sorry for them if they weren’t so damned gullible.
