Trump Asks His Supporters Whether They Want a ‘White’ or ‘Black’ President, ‘I Think You’d Rather Have the White Guy!’
Donald Trump has probably never been as clear as he was today in making a point during his speech at another rally. It was black and white—as he often sees the world. People are either for or against him. People who support him are good, and people against him are bad. It really is that simple.
Only today, things devolved into a literal black-and-white point. Yes, that means race.
Trump’s rally occurred in South Carolina. No state is immune from racism – not one, but perhaps Trump felt “freer” to discuss race in South Carolina (Which elected Sen. Tim Scott, so that must be taken into account). The relevant portion of the speech was certainly meant to highlight his perceived accomplishments versus those of former President Obama. Trump is certainly entitled – especially during a campaign – to characterize his accomplishments however he wants.
Yes, except this time, instead of using the obvious reference to Obama, or even “my predecces0r,” Trump went straight black and white, meaning do you prefer a black president or a white one? Yes, there is some wiggle room in there, just enough deniability, but the message was clear:
“Would you rather have the black president, or the white president who got $1.7 billion off the (Indecertible, “price”?), I think you’d rather have the white guy, right now.”
How the hell isn’t this a bigger story?

What if the candidate was Tim Scott, who – Republican or not, is a gifted politician who actually can get things done? Does a statement like that come out? Does it work?
Regardless, there was no need at all to bring up race except to bait the racists in the MAGA party. One worries that there is going to be a lot more of this as the race goes on.
One of the last things this country needs is more division. The last thing the country needs is the ongoing – throughout history – racial divisions.
I’m including a particularly interesting response. It doesn’t fit universally, but it fits pretty well.

Trump has made overt Racism so mainstream and normalized amongst his supporters that they fall into one of three categories:
1) They don’t care.
2) They downplay it as that’s not what he meant
3) They embrace it because it is exactly how they feel.— Joe Dowdell (@joedowdellnyc) April 4, 2024

Not surprised here. He's a chip off of the old block. Nothing to see here other than his racist, vile self. I loathe this man with a passion!

Speaking directly to his base.
I’m sure Tim Scott is back there clapping somewhere. https://t.co/KYO4JbeEKe

Because nothing he says has any shock value anymore. His cult members and MSM will just spin it and say it was somehow "out of context". 🙄

Campaigning doesn't seem to be benefiting Trump much. Maybe they should just confine him to his bunker?
