Most of us know by now that former President Donald Trump is grasping at straws in an attempt to delay proceedings in his hush money trial which is set to begin soon. And one leading attorney has said that may even include firing his legal team in order to slow things down. That attorney is Joyce Vance, a former U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Alabama. She believes Trump wants to delay the trial, which is about hush money payments allegedly made to adult film star Stormy Daniels. Writing on her Substack blog, Vance suggests Trump may try to have Judge Juan Merchan recused from the case, or may even go as far as to fire his lawyers.

This trial will determine if Trump falsified business records regarding hush money payments to Daniels to keep an alleged fling out of the public eye before the 2016 election, as the criminal indictment alleges. Prosecutors led by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg allege the payments were connected to a scheme to stop potentially damaging stories about the GOP favorite from becoming public. Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee for 2024, keeps maintaining he hasn’t done anything wrong and has pleaded not guilty to the 34 charges against him in the case, according to Newsweek.

“With trial only two weeks away, Trump is showing increasing signs of desperation,” Vance writes.

As I said earlier, the man is definitely grabbing at straws, and Vance notes:

“There are also the time-honored strategies of the desperate: getting sick or finding a sick or dying family member and firing your lawyers,” she adds.

“What happens if Trump fires his lawyers? This can be a difficult one because defendants are entitled to counsel of their choosing, and lawyers are entitled to sufficient time to prepare. But Trump has a lot of lawyers on his team and the Judge has to be prepared for this one. Trump would have to argue a significant issue has developed with his lawyers before the Judge would agree to let them out of the case, and it’s going to be difficult to do that with all of them. The Judge could tell him to go ahead with the remaining lawyers, because if Trump does this at the eleventh hour, it’s going to look manufactured. But it’s still an issue the Judge has to be careful about to avoid problems on appeal, and so far, Judge Merchan has shown himself to be a careful, meticulous jurist.”

Last Tuesday, Judge Merchan imposed a gag order on Trump after he verbally attacked Merchan and his daughter, Loren Merchan, in public. Trump attacked Loren Merchan for her work in Democratic political circles and called for Merchan to be recused from the case.

Just today, on Tuesday, Trump couldn’t help himself and posted, “I just was informed that another corrupt New York Judge, Juan Merchan, GAGGED me so that I can not talk about the corruption and conflicts taking place in his courtroom with respect to a case that everyone, including the D.A., felt should never have been brought. They can talk about me, but I can’t talk about them??? That sounds fair, doesn’t it? This Judge should be recused, and the case should be thrown out. There has virtually never been a more conflicted judge than this one. ELECTION INTERFERENCE at its worst!”

Trump never fails to portray himself as the victim and everyone else as guilty. It will be a huge relief when this man is out of politics. I don’t know when that will happen but it can’t be soon enough for me. I’ve been on this Earth for a long time and I’ve seen American politics go through so many sad changes. I was a toddler when JFK was assassinated but I well remember how scandalized people were over Watergate, which pales in comparison to what Trump is doing.

No wonder I’m sad.
