We already told you [1] all about Melania Trump’s highly-anticipated already on sale memoir, the eponymous Melania due out in October. But what we didn’t have for you at the time of our original reporting was a look at the cover of the book.
That tracks, because it’s still not out yet. I don’t think even Melania had thought of a cover yet. It’s probably the last thing that she or anyone involved in publishing it thought of at all. They just knew they needed something to put a price tag on.
That’s unfortunate, because as books go, the cover is pretty important. It serves as a person’s first impression of what’s in their hands. You’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover, of course. But if the name of the book were, say, “How to Make a Bazillion Dollars In Just a Month,” you’d think there might be a picture of money on the cover. A yacht or something, at least.
A book cover conveys the tone of the book. It lets you know the genre (are there orcs and wizards on the cover?). It lets you know the storyline (is there a no-nonsense businesswoman on the front?).
What a successful book cover DOESN’T do is make you guess at all those things.
But if you are going to go with something minimalist (and this one’s pretty minimal), you at least have to come up with something original. This one looks like maybe Melania looked at the vanity where she puts on her makeup in the morning, spotted something, and just went with that.
Okay, hold your breath:
Now, it’s not like Mel just grabbed the idea from the bottle of perfume itself. No, this actually looks like ANOTHER MEMOIR, documenting all the perfumes that ever came from Karl Lagerfeld’s collection.
But the cover of his memoir DOES do all the things that it’s supposed to. Look like what it’s about? Check. Name in line with what you might call a fashion collection? Check. Impart the sultry, black feel and tone of an elegant perfume? Check, check, check.
Does she EVER have any original thoughts? Or is this just another copycat session like when she stole Michelle Obama’s speech?
It’s literally in the same font as the book it’s copying.
“Her publisher hates her,” said one person on social media. She seems determined to make everyone else hate her just as much.
