GOP Says Trump Should Get the Same Secret Service Protection as Biden, So Donald Can Keep Golfing
Or he could, you know, stop golfing so much.
With as much golf as Donald Trump played while he was president, you’d think his protection detail might have the drill down by now. But specific protocols for former presidents is slightly different than for those currently serving.
Trump, in fact, doesn’t even get the same kind of detail now that he’s not in the White House that Kamala Harris gets. That’s as it should be, of course. Harris is the current Vice President, and Trump is merely a candidate. If he weren’t a former president, his protection detail would have been in their 4th day on the job the first time he was shot at in Pennsylvania.
Normal candidates get Secret Service only within 120 days of the upcoming presidential election.
The only difference between the level of protection that Joe Biden gets and Kamala Harris gets is that the Secret Service will not be accompanying Harris to the restroom until she’s elected.

Republicans plan to vote on a bill this week would change that whole bathroom thing for Kamala — and Trump as well. They want the former president to receive the same detail as Joe Biden currently enjoys.
A group of seven Republican senators sent a letter to the head of the Secret Service on Tuesday making the demand. “Put simply, President Trump does not have the Secret Service protective detail commensurate with the existing threat environment,” the letter reads.
I wonder if at any point they’ve considered asking Trump to stop being such a target.
I don’t mean, of course, that Trump deserves threats on his life in any way. Nobody should be subject to those kinds of threats. I’m just saying that I have a pretty good track record of not getting pulled over by the cops just by not breaking the law in my car.
Trump seems to be on a mission to anger everyone but his supporters.
Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer has already indicated that he’s open to the idea of more funding for the Secret Service, but Republicans are insistent that resources be moved from areas they think are less important. One Congressman suggested they might save money by taking away some protection for former president Jimmy Carter, who is in hospice.
Kansas Senator Roger Marshall summed up the GOP’s objections to simply allocating more money:
“We don’t need more funding. We’ve got 7,000 Secret Service officers out there right now. There’s 100 Secret Service offices across the country. They’ve got plenty of personnel. They’ve got plenty of money. They need to prioritize where to be placing these Secret Service agents.”
In other words, whatever the Secret Service is doing out there, they need to be focused on Trump so he can golf in peace.
