Chelsea Handler Compares Melania Trump to a Prostitute at Critics Choice Awards
At the 2025 Critics Choice Awards, comedian Chelsea Handler did what she does best: took a hilarious and unapologetic jab at the Trump family. This time, the target was none other than Melania Trump. The former First Lady has been the subject of much ridicule, but Handler’s quip at the awards ceremony definitely took the cake.
Handler, known for her sharp political humor, couldn’t help but take a shot during her presentation. “It was a huge year for biopics,” Handler said during her opening monologue while listing off some notable films. “A Complete Unknown about Bob Dylan, Maria about Maria Callas, and Anora about Melania Trump.” Anora is a critically acclaimed film that follows a young prostitute (Mikey Madison) who marries the son of a Russian oligarch.
And just like that, Handler served up one of her signature lines that had the audience roaring with laughter—and maybe a few people shaking their heads at the sheer audacity of it all.
For those of us who have watched Melania’s tenure as First Lady closely (or at least paid attention to her more public moments), Handler’s joke was spot-on. Melania has been criticized for staying largely silent during her time in the White House, while her husband’s controversial actions and policies spoke volumes. Handler’s line is a biting commentary on the perceived role Melania played in Trump’s political circus, where she often seemed like little more than a glorified arm candy to her husband. Of course, it’s no secret that Donald Trump has a long history of using people for personal gain, and Handler’s joke doesn’t miss that point either.

Handler has always been fearless when it comes to calling out powerful figures, and the Trumps are no exception. From Melania’s much-discussed “I really don’t care, do you?” jacket moment to Donald’s constant antics, Handler never holds back in using her comedy to call out hypocrisy, ignorance, and the absurdity of it all. And honestly, after four years of political chaos under Trump, it’s hard not to appreciate her biting wit and bold remarks.
While some might argue that Handler’s joke was a little too much, let’s be real: Melania and Donald Trump have spent years making their lives—and, more importantly, their public personas—fair game for humor. Handler is just doing what she does best: holding them accountable with a side of humor.
In the end, Handler’s jab was a sharp, funny reminder of the Trump administration’s many, many low points. It’s safe to say that for many of us, the laughs were well worth it.
