KC Chiefs Star Is ‘Excited’ to Have Trump Attending the Super Bowl – Although His Girlfriend Probably Isn’t
Travis Kelce speaks out.
Travis Kelce, the superstar tight end for the Super Bowl-bound Kansas City Chiefs, has been dating Taylor Swift for some time now, nearly 2 years. And in that time, he’s seen his share of feuding between Tay-Tay and Donald Trump, all over the fact that she endorsed Kamala Harris for President in 2024.
Now there might be a little awkwardness at home, because the Chiefs just held a press conference Wednesday ahead of the big game. During the presser, a reporter asked Kelce how he felt about Trump’s plans to attend the championship game, and he said it was going to be “a great honor” to have him there.
“I think, you know, no matter who the president is, I know I’m excited because it’s the biggest game of my life, you know, and having the president there, you know, it’s the best country in the world. So, that’d be pretty cool.”
Indeed, no sitting president has ever attended a Super Bowl. Granted, the Super Bowl only goes as far back as LBJ, but it’s still a big deal.

But the point of the question was, presumably, how Kelce felt about Trump’s presence in light of the infamous tweet posted to his social media platform Truth Social after her Harris endorsement:

The feud, of course, goes back much further than that — Swift was posting about Donald Trump during his previous previous campaign for the presidency in 2020, and has detailed to the media her regret for not speaking out against him in 2016 as well. She certainly didn’t pull any punches when she did pipe up:
After stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism your entire presidency, you have the nerve to feign moral superiority before threatening violence? ‘When the looting starts the shooting starts’??? We will vote you out in November. @realdonaldtrump

But she wasn’t dating Kelce back then, and Kelce didn’t really make his politics known a whole lot before he had a famously politically-minded girlfriend.
Now, I assume that Kelce is being diplomatic here. It only makes sense that he’d want to be guarded about anything controversial going into the most important game of the year. He doesn’t want to be a distraction, especially after a season with the team that every other team’s fans love to hate. The Chiefs have been the beneficiaries of some pretty questionable officiating this season, and the last thing they need is more people mad at them.
But here’s the thing, Trav. You’re fixing to undo a lot of the good you’ve been doing over the years.
Travis Kelce was one of the very first white players to kneel during the anthem when Colin Kaepernick bravely protested police brutality a few years back. He’s got a heck of a great charity, “Eighty-Seven and Running,” that supports disadvantaged kids. He did commercials for Bud Light when conservatives were boycotting it and he even filmed spots encouraging people to get COVID boosters.
I get that he doesn’t want to rock the boat and risk some kind of blowback, and maybe he even thinks he’s protecting his status as someone who’s able to spread goodwill. And the NFL itself likely pressured him in advance to stay mum or be positive — I doubt they threatened to fire the soon-to-be legendary tight end, but I also doubt they had a ticker tape parade planned if he didn’t just toe the line.
But now is not the time, argues an op-ed in Teen Vogue. Right now, 16 days into his second term, Trump is doing awful, awful things, and legitimizing him in any way is far more dangerous than speaking out against him.
From the article:
…did he have to give such a dutiful, “respectful” answer to a president who, in just his first few weeks in office, has attempted to ban gender-affirming care for trans youth, issued a now-blocked order aiming to end birthright citizenship, and promised the “mass deportation” of immigrants that has resulted in the harassment of U.S. citizens?
Now is not the time to show respect to the office of the President of the United States, as he does not seem to respect many of the citizens he governs. Through a mountain of executive orders, Trump is attempting to restrict the civil rights of numerous marginalized groups, from LGBTQ students to immigrants. Since he took office, far right and Neo-Nazi groups have rejoiced, excited about the next four years as a time for growth; in fact, Trump has surrounded himself with people who have consorted with and praised white nationalists in the past. Trump has attacked DEI efforts across the federal government, and now a “target” list of mostly Black federal government employees was seemingly created by the conservative watchdog group American Accountability Foundation. And, trans kids are being denied crucial gender-affirming care, while transgender members of the military are being ousted.
The article goes on, of course, to enumerate the other things Trump has done so far, and reactions from other celebrities, and what might have been instead. And they concluded the same thing that I would think, if Travis — as I suspect — is not actually a Trump supporter:
“He could have rolled his eyes a little, at the very least.” I mean, come on. This is the guy who thought your team was from Kansas, Travis.
